- [now that Sam and Andrew are seeing each other]
- Samantha Stewart: Do you really have to go back?
- Andrew Foyle: Yeah, soon. Arm's almost healed.
- Samantha Stewart: Maybe I should break the other one?
- Andrew Foyle: You keep your spanner away from me.
- Samantha Stewart: Mrs. Bradley's got me fixing her car. An old beast of a thing.
- Andrew Foyle: Mrs. Bradley or the car?
- Chief Inspector James Collier: It's what I've said from the beginning: war does different things to different people. Look what it's done to me.
- DCS Foyle: [Taking Collier's investigation notes that Milner has improperly given to him] You know, there are, uh, going to be two of us suspended at this rate.
- Sgt. Paul Milner: I'll be happy to join you, sir.
- DCS Foyle: [Softly] Thanks.
- Sgt. Paul Milner: I'll let myself out.
- [Mr. Powell, a blind WWI veteran, finds his own son deserted from his regiment and is living in the house under an assumed name]
- Mark Wilson: I couldn't take it anymore! You don't understand...
- Malcolm Powell: Of course I understand! You didn't want to end up like me.
- [Milner walks out of the "guesthouse" after interviewing the residents]
- Samantha Stewart: Friendly lot, aren't they?
- Sgt. Paul Milner: Just get me out of here, Sam.
- Samantha Stewart: Gladly.
- Andrew Foyle: [Andrew and Samantha are walking along the beach at Hastings after they have seen "Gone With The Wind"] God, I love it here!
- [stops walking and quotes]
- Andrew Foyle: "How could I ever leave here, With the English sky so blue? Can I turn from the trees as they bend in the breeze, Or forsake the evening dew?"
- Samantha Stewart: That's nice.
- Andrew Foyle: I just made it up.
- Samantha Stewart: A poet?
- Andrew Foyle: [laughs] Killing time in the dispersal hut.
- Samantha Stewart: [they are somber for a moment] You're going back, aren't you?
- Andrew Foyle: Seems they can't manage without me.
- Samantha Stewart: You can't fly.
- Andrew Foyle: The arm's healing.
- Samantha Stewart: Maybe I should break the other one.
- Andrew Foyle: Just keep your spanner away from me, huh?
- [laughs]
- Samantha Stewart: [sighs] I'm going to worry about you now, the whole time.
- Andrew Foyle: You said I was going to come through all right, you were sure of it.
- Samantha Stewart: [sighs again] That was before.
- Andrew Foyle: I didn't think you liked me.
- Samantha Stewart: I can see it now. I'll be the one sitting at home, listening to the wireless, writing you letters every day. I'll probably go grey!
- Andrew Foyle: Sam, I'm not going to be very far away.
- Samantha Stewart: I hate this stupid war. I wish Hitler would just
- [pauses as she searches for the right word]
- Samantha Stewart: drown.
- Andrew Foyle: There is something I wanted to say.
- Samantha Stewart: About your father?
- Andrew Foyle: Well, you know how he is. Likes to keep everything in separate boxes.
- Samantha Stewart: Hmh... I'm sure he'd pack me off to Lyminster the moment he found out.
- [looks at Andrew]
- Samantha Stewart: You will take care of yourself, Andrew? Promise me?
- Andrew Foyle: [they kiss briefly and Andrew smiles] I promise.
