- Eddie is feeling depressed, and Martin calls a dog psychiatrist. Frasier and Niles make fun of the idea, but ruminating about the possible reasons for Eddie's funk leads them to dwell on all the reasons to be unhappy with their own lives.
- When Eddie becomes lethargic and refuses to eat, Daphne and Martin try everything to perk him up. Much to the amusement of Frasier and Niles, Martin calls an animal psychiatrist (guest star Zeljko Ivanek) to consult with the dog. Also, Roz meets a handsome young doctor who is a bit too knowledgeable about the female persuasion.
- During a slow day on his show at KACL, Frasier decides to tell a story about the aftermath of Eddie's recent trip to the vet. The episode then continues in flashback - Eddie is not himself: he has lost his appetite, he is not sleeping, and seems generally listless. The vet says he is physically fine, so Martin worries that he may be depressed, and Daphne suggests taking him to a dog psychiatrist. Naturally, Frasier and Niles think the idea is not only absurd but dishonest; Frasier calls them "the very definition of charlatanism". Despite this, they agree to be in attendance for the session, although they find it difficult to take the procedure seriously. The diagnosis is that Eddie senses depression elsewhere in the family, so they are encouraged to act positively when around him. After the session, they all start to wonder who could be the source of Eddie's depression as they begin to examine their own inevitability. In the end, it turns out Eddie was depressed because he was missing his favorite toy, which heartens the group, believing that should take an example from Eddie. The story is interspersed with a parallel narrative about Roz dating a new tenant in Elliot Bay Towers, who happens to be a gynaecologist with an impressive collection of professional equipment. Roz, unsurprisingly, does not appreciate Frasier telling this parallel narrative.
- On a sunny day in Seattle, Frasier and Roz are surprised to find no callers waiting to talk to them, as their show starts. Frasier urges anyone to call in, and gets a call from a woman named Alice. Alice claims she's not feeling happy, and with Frasier's permission, he regales her and his listeners with a story of something that happened to him and the others recently.
After a trip to the vet, it seems that Eddie just isn't happy. Everyone tries to figure out what could be bothering him, but Martin finally decides to call in a Pet Psychiatrist. The Psychiatrist asks for all family members to be present (including Niles and Daphne), so he can analyze them and Eddie. However, during the course of his analysis, Frasier and Niles can't help but make jabs at a profession they don't see as real.
After sitting with Eddie, the Psychiatrist claims that it is most likely the attitude and emotions of those around him that is making Eddie so dour, and requests that everyone try to be perkier and happier.
Just as he leaves, Roz shows up, upset that another possible dating prospect has not gone so well. Her issue soon sparks everyone else to consider unhappiness, death, as well as a number of other dark and moody issues.
As they talk, Niles finds a Barbie doll in the sofa cushions, and tosses it on the floor, causing Eddie to instantly run to it and start playing. It soon becomes apparent that Eddie just missed one of his favorite toys.
As if to compliment the mood, a tray of fresh cookies is finished baking, and everyone retires to the kitchen for cookies and milk.
Frasier then comes out of his narration, and Alice claims she feels much better after hearing his story. Frasier then advises his listeners to take in life's simple pleasures.
As he signs off, he bites into a cookie sitting nearby, and breaks a tooth on a walnut inside. He angrily rushes out the door, cursing his misfortune.
