The is the second time in the Cheers (1982)/Frasier (1993) universe when Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) has sang Gilbert and Sullivan's "Three Little Maids" and reminisced about his Yum Yum role. The first time was in the Cheers episode, Simon Says (1987).
Kelsey Grammer has also sung Gilbert and Sullivan as his recurring character on the Simpsons, Sideshow Bob. In the 1994 episode Cape Feare, Bart foils his plan by having his sing the score of the HMS Pinafore (which is also mentioned by Kate in this episode).
Bulldog uses the name "Dr. Julius Erving," knowing that Frasier won't know that was the name of an NBA legend (often referred to as "Dr. J"). A year later, the real Julius Erving plays a caller who calls Frasier a "weenie" because of his lack of sports knowledge.
As Kate is about to cancel "Pet Chat," the audience gets a rare look at KACL's lineup: Preceding Frasier's 3-hour show each day are "Ask Dr. Health" and "Bonnie Weems the Auto Lady." Following it are/were "The Gonzo Sports Show," "Pet Chat with Nanette," "Ma Nature," "Gil Chesterton's Restaurant Beat" and "Floyd Lovett the Happy Chef."
The following exchange takes place when Niles (David Hyde Pierce) meets Kate (Mercedes Ruehl) for the first time: Niles: [disappointed] "Oh." [hands back card to Frasier (Kelsey Grammer)] "As my Japanese gardener says, 'Imaimashi chikusho.'" Kate: "Watch your mouth!" Niles: "Oh, you speak Japanese?" [she nods] "Oh, I'll just retreat so that I can be one with my humiliation." The phrase that offends Kate translates to "annoying beast."
