Not a Lot of Spark

Martin spends some time with Roz's mother. She has a great time, but he finds her utterly boring. The problem is, she would like to see Martin again, but he would as soon have a root canal. So this leads to Frasier overstepping his bounds again and not leading with the truth. We've seen this same plot a couple times before, unfortunately.

10-Star program, 5-star episode.

A very rare episode that leaves a bit of a bad taste in the mouth, despite the usual excellence of talent on display: the joke is supposed to be that Martin finds Roz's mother, a former Wisconsin state Attorney General, a boring gas-bag. Apparently the writers and the casting director were on different planets that week, because Mrs. Doyle, played by veteran actress Eva Marie Saint, comes across as a very warm and charming woman. Martin's rejection of her seems cruel and illogical--not characteristic of him. The set-up would have been funnier if she were written less sympathetically. A very rare misstep by the gifted "Frasier" scribes.
