I'm Flushed

Niles and Frasier hire a plumber to come fix the toilet after their failure to repair it. The guy that shows up is one who tormented Niles in junior high school. He and his brother were first rate bullies. Frasier was victimized by the brother. Niles is hilarious as he battle through his angst. What transpires is a scene to die for, involving a impromptu therapy session. Excellent.

Touching in a way

This is one of several episodes in which the Niles and Frasier confront the same sort of ethical dilemma only to have one brother meet the challenge and the one on fail. In this case Niles succeeds and Frasier fails. I like these sort of episodes a lot. My favorite dynamic on the show is seeing the two brothers being put in the same or similar situations. Niles-on the page-can come across as a Frasier clone but DHP plays Niles so differently than Frasier that the two brothers end up so alike and so different.

I also think the reconciliation-while played for laughs-has just enough pathos to be touching. This isn't a sentimental episode but it is close to one.

Having been working my way through the series 2 DVD I can't say there have been many episodes that have grabbed my attention.

This one however is a solid episode, that plays to its strengths by putting Frasier and Niles together. This dynamic is at the heart of the show, and little by little the writers were starting to realise that.

I liked some of Daphne's lines (delivered with aplomb by Jane Leeves) and as ever wished that Roz was given more to do.

A much better episode of the show.
