The symbol for the robot church is the electronic schematic symbol for the resistor.
The voice of Robot Devil is provided by Dan Castellaneta, who famously voiced Homer on "The Simpsons" (1989). When Fry and Leela open the door to Robot Hell, visible on the bottom right corner of the screen is a heart with an arrow through etched on the wall, reading "H.S. 4 M.B.", meaning Homer Simpson 4 Marge Bouvier.
David X. Cohen noted that the writing team had begun to loosen up during this episode, which gave it a feel similar to the series' later episodes. Eric Kaplan claimed that before editing, there was enough material to make a three-part episode.
The title is a paraphrase of "Hell Is Other People", from the 1944 Existentialist play "Huis Clos" ("Closed Door" or "No Exit"), by Jean-Paul Sartre.
