The One With The Weird Romance...
taylorkingston13 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this episode. It's funny, but it also makes you think about couple struggles. Especially if one of them is insane, and will literally kill anything that threatens that relationship.

In this episode, the Planet Express ship gets an upgrade, where the crew can now choose from a bundle of personalities for the ship to have. But when Bender picks one, he falls in love with the ship. Then the ship goes crazy when Bender tries to break it off. Talk about an almost fatal relationship.

Title card: When you see the robot, drink!

Best part of this episode: Pretty much anything.

Worst part of this episode: Nothing in particular.

Overall, I give this episode a 7 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Great.

Bender falls in love... with the ship!

Warning: Spoilers
As the episode opens Bender is having an argument with the ship because it doesn't approve of his taste in 'art'. After getting the contract to deliver goods for Romanticorp the professor pays to have certain upgrades to the ship; this includes giving it a new adjustable personality. When a female personality is selected it isn't long before Bender and the ship are in love. At first this is just an annoyance to the others but when Bender decides it is time to move on it becomes positively dangerous when the ship can't get over it and will do whatever it takes to become one with Bender... even flying into a quasar so that they can become a singularity! While this is all going on the crew have to deliver a shipment of candy hearts to Omicron Persei 8 to show how much the people of Earth like (and fear) them; it does not go quite as planned as the concept of 'Wuv' confuses and annoys them!

This was a fun St. Valentines special. The numerous spoofs of 2001 were very funny although I suspect some of them wouldn't work as well if you've not seen that film. You don't need to have seen anything to find the scenes at Romanticorp hilarious; Leela getting poked with a cattle prod whenever she wasn't romantic enough and the cute cuddly toys being made by stuffing cute little animals were laugh out loud funny! This episode is notably for the guest appearance from Sigourney Weaver; she does a fine job providing the voice for the Planet Express ship. Given how the ship had only been used as a mode of transport before it was a bit of a surprise to learn that it had a personality... no doubt after the way it ended we won't be hearing any more of its personality in later episodes. If you think Bender dumping the ship is hardly the thing for the Valentine's episode; Fry does something for Leela which could certainly be considered romantic; as is the result of Leela dumping the candy hearts.
