In the future pro-wrestling is fixed!
Tweekums19 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
When Hermes returns from the Brainslug Planet with a Brainslug attached to his head the rest of the Planet Express crew decide to take some time off and go to the cinema. During the film Bender annoys the patron in front of him to the point that he loses his temper... Bender had no idea that he was annoying 'The Masked Unit'; star of the Ultimate Robot Fighting League. Obviously Bender can't win fairly but when The Masked Unit slips of some spilt oil the chairman of the league sees potential in having Bender as a fighter. After winning his first fight he learns that the fights are fixed but with the money rolling in and floozies on each arm he doesn't care... until it is decided he isn't popular enough to be a winner and is ordered to fight in a pink tutu under the name 'The Gender Bender' Leela acts as his trainer as he prepares for his next fight but when the fight begins she is shocked to learn that his opponent is actually being remotely controlled by the martial arts instructor who wouldn't let her compete because she was a girl... clearly it is time for her to get her revenge!

There are plenty of laughs to be had in this episode; it was good to see the Brainslugs appearing again as they are pretty funny and Bender's obnoxious behaviour was hilarious as was seeing Bender in a pink tutu and blond wig. While pro-wrestling is a fairly easy target for mockery it was done in a way that provided plenty of laughs; mostly from the various 'unpopular' robots Bender beats in the rigged fights. Leela's old instructor Master Fnog was pretty funny too.

The One Where Bender Wrestles...

Warning: Spoilers
I like this episode. I could like it more, but it's still worth a watch, and it's still a fun time to be had.

In this episode, Bender gets into with a wrestling robot, who he accidentally knocks out. But then amazingly, at the exact instant that happened, Bender is offered a job as a profession robot wrestler, and Leela talks him into doing it, and even offers to train him. Bender discovers that the robot wrestling world doesn't work like he thought, but since he's getting women, becoming rich, and popular, he doesn't really care. But then the fame takes him over, and he may even betray some friends.

Title Card: Nominated For Three Glemmys.

Overall, I give this episode a 6 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Good.

Horribly aged episodes like these make it tough to rewatch this show
badcgishark3 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm currently going through the entire series to prepare for the new season and, while I watched the show here and there in the 2000's, I never did a full watch of the entire series. This is a terribly aged episode due to horrific anti-trans rhetoric.

I'm sure the not helpful button is getting mashed dear reader, but hear me out. It is one thing to go back to shows from this era and see anti-LGBTQIA+ jokes and, while still hurtful, many of these are not exactly cruel.

The anti-trans part of this is especially cruel. Bender is on a successful run as a robot wrestler, but due to sagging merchandise sales the head of the company wants to change his wrestling persona to "Make everyone hate him, he will now be Gender Bender".

Just look at this for a minute. This goes beyond some of the lesser-cruel jokes (Zapp Branigans trans date having a "surprise" for him on the Valentine episode) and is just straight up "Anyone who is non-gender conforming should be at least despised if not attacked for daring to gender bend".

Yes Matt Groening and the gang did end up creating some really awesome LGBTQIA+ affirming shows later on in the decade and obviously this is time capsule from 23 years ago. But just imagine being a trans person during that time at school, work, etc. Knowing that millions of people just watched a popular show that says trans people should be hated. There were not less trans people then, there were less people who could openly be trans because of awful garbage like this episode.

The series is fine, the new season will be great, this drek however really should come with a disclaimer at the beginning so people can skip this trans hatred.

1/10.
