... well, not that old.
Christie Love is a LAPD detective. She is also a young single black woman at a time when a woman in a big city police department employed as a detective was rare.
This episode was about a wino who stumbles across a syndicate crime in his effort to find some shelter for the night and is killed by said syndicate. But another wino saw the body and saw the head of the syndicate leaving the scene, but managed to sneak away in the darkness.
Love gets the homicide case of the wino, which is considered just another street killing, and her boss in this case, Marker, is played by Scott Brady, who in his heyday was the leading man in action films such as "He Walked By Night" and "Undertow". Marker is the Archie Bunkeresque detective in charge of breaking up the "Wheeler gang", responsible for lots of mob crime in the city at the time. Little does he know that his case and Love's case are related.
I hadn't seen any episodes of this show since I was a teenager and it was on the air. Graves is just perfect for this part. She plays Christie as smart, sassy, and someone who knows how to handle herself. Most of the prejudice she encounters is because she is a woman in what is very much a man's world. But there is one scene when she tries to crash an upscale private club where the racism she encounters is subtle, but it is there, she knows it, and she knows how to work it and even have a little fun at the racists' expense.
Note that the wino murder witness is played by Kenneth Tobey, helicopter pilot on the fun 50s action show Whirlybirds.
