During the opening narration, the narrator describes the bank robbers' route as, "...all the way from Gallup, New Mexico to Flagstaff, Arizona, and don't forget Wiona, Kingman, Barstow, and San Bernardino." This is a quote from the song titled "Get Your Kicks (On Route 66)", which was written by Bobby Troup in 1946.
At one point, Sam Vittorio makes a most disparaging remark about the TV series My Mother the Car. Two of the writers of this episode, Allan Burns and Chris Hayward, were the creators of that series.
Sam Vittorio was played by J. Carroll Naish, an Irish-American character actor who became famous for playing ethnic characters. He was particularly adept at playing Italians, doing so in movies like "Sahara" (1943) with Humphrey Bogart and on radio in the hit series "Life With Luigi."
Don Adams and Barbara Feldon play bankrobbers "Connie and Floyd". This is a clear reference to real life depression-era bank robbers Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. At the time this episode aired, the Warner Bros film "Bonnie and Clyde"(1967) had only recently been released with much fanfare and huge box office receipts. The film starred Warren Beatty as 'Clyde Barrow', and Faye Dunaway as 'Bonnie Parker'.
