An elderly German man, now a British citizen working as a scientist is furious, when a West German politician arrives for a State visit.
What a fascinating first episode, it manages to do two things very well, first it introduces the main characters, setting out their personalities and family lives very quickly, and secondly I thought the storyline was fantastic, incredibly powerful, the wounds of the second world war would still have been gaping for many people.
It's well paced, well reasoned and very well acted, a strong cast assembled, with plenty of well known faces.
From what I see so far, Gideon is the down to Earth family man, Cox is the more frosty character, but very capable.
I thought Alfie Bass was absolutely terrific as Max Fischer, born in 1916, he'd have been 48 here, but looks at least 70. I think his character is fascinating, and you can see the reason for his anger, and his need for revenge, well balanced with the attitudes of wife, Sarah.
It's a very good debut episode.
8/10.
