Melodrama (#6.19)

Warning: Spoilers
The man Blanche is seeing, Mel Bushman, is not answering her calls. She gets all worried because she thinks he is dead. Turns out he was just on vacation, but the idea of him not being there was so bad that Blanche wants their relationship to be serious, but this doesn't work out. And Rose tries to become a reporter.

A pretty good episode. My favorite is Rose's report story. How during the robber, she as the only reporter still makes a report on the dog show. This is so Rose, made me laugh a lot.

The story about Blanche's relationship was also pretty good by letting her see that relationship is less fun than just having good time together.

Blanche's go-to date for desperate times, Fred Flintstone with a better car.

Okay, so Alan King isn't exactly the poster man for glamour, a happy go lucky "zipper king" who Blanche is worried about since he hasn't returned her calls. Just wait until you see Blanche's keychain for her various men friends, entering his apartment, expecting the worst. Obviously just a "friend with benefits", King (as Mel Bushman) is flattered by her concern, but is this this really love? Then there's Rose's audition to become a weekend reporter, giving Rose the opportunity to interview Dorothy (with Sophia as cameraman), and revealing a secret that Dorothy has been desperately trying to hide from her mother. While the little comedy bit of Sophia insulting Blanche over her sexual proclivities is funny, it seems rather forced as far as realism over the characters involved. Dorothy's retort is perfect, but it doesn't sound right coming out of her when you really think about who Dorothy is. While Mel would be mentioned a few times, this would be his only appearance, and is just a moderately well written throwaway episode. Poor Rose comes off as a real ninny in the episode, although the sudden switch in her interview with Dorothy and Sophia is unexpected. Betty White's love for pets is prominently featured though even though they should have toned down her dinginess for the sake of better characterizations for all the characters rather than just for cheap laughs.
