Gary agrees to take Ron back to 1940
Tweekums7 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Yvonne is due to go to Huddersfield for part of her Open University course and isn't pleased when she goes to get a suitcase and finds it full of Gary's 1940s apparel and various items he intends to take back to give to Phoebe and her father. He tries to explain it away as part of a party preparation but she isn't convinced. Gary then goes to see Ron to get a ration book and wartime ID card that would pass muster in 1940… he agrees on condition that Gary takes him on his next trip there. Reluctantly Gary agrees but when they walk through the passage Gary ends up in 1940 while Ron is still in 1993… and not amused as he thinks Gary has played a joke on him. Gary continues to the Royal Oak and learns that Phoebe has moved out. Her new home is bombed but she doesn't want to return to the pub and suggests that she could live in Gary's spare room… something that is obviously impossible. Gary's excuse for why she can't just makes matters worse.

This was another enjoyable episode with plenty of laughs and an inventive story. It good to have it explicitly shown that it is only Gary who can time travel… even though it should be obvious as otherwise everybody who walked through the passage would end up in the war! Creating a situation where Phoebe wanted to be with Gary for more of the time was interesting as it forced Gary to come up with an excuse on the spot and his excuse was both amusing and guaranteed to make matters worse! In this episode we see that Gary is somewhat hypocritical when he starts to get jealous when he sees Yvonne dancing with another man. The cast does a fine job; it was good to see Victor McGuire's Ron take a larger role as he is one of the series funnier characters even if he is less important than Gary, Phoebe and Yvonne from a dramatic point of view. Overall another good episode; the series has definitely established itself at this point.
