Simply Delightful
GunnersMate2 May 2018
With only a pair of episodes left in this short-lived series, More Than a Game focuses on the things that make this show so delightful. We have our quirky townsfolk working together (...at least most of the time, which is even better...), there is a rivalry with Dunbraken Arms (with secret spying, covert actions, and ringers), and Hamish supports his fellow Lochdubhians without strictly walking the line of law. Funny with bits of terrific relationship cementing it all together. Simply the best.

Warning: Spoilers
This show is frequently highly amusing but it doesn't cause actual out-loud belly laughs all that often. This episode really made me howl with laughter. It started off quite gently, with the row on the shinty pitch between Lachy Snr & Jnr and then Hamish getting the lowdown on the details of the new coach, which he caps off with the almost-missed comment "Still no road tax though". (Or words to that effect)

But from the introduction of the motorbiking femme fatale it all gets seriously funny. It's obvious the Lochdubh contingent are Up To Something, when TV John places a bet on the opposing team but when the surprise player arrived by helicopter it was simply hilarious.

I definitely watched this back in the day when it was on TV, and I don't know if at that time I suspected - as I did on this viewing - that Dallas Young really was a shinty player. At the time, I can't think of any way I could have checked either. At least not without a lot of effort. Nor was I familiar with the movie they've drawn from for his entrance. None of this matters (though it's brilliant being able to satisfy my curiosity so easily nowadays!) - it was just SO funny!

I never expected one of the best episodes to be one with sport in it!
