Nightclub singer Buddy Keene (John Gabriel) wants a shortcut on the road to success and fame. Gossip columnist Karen Ward (Jean Byron) is coming to the islands and he sees his chance. A nice writeup by her will shoot him to the top. He meets her by deliberately stepping in front of her car and plays the victim of a near miss. He then takes her around the area while doing a serious suck up job. After two days they decide to wed. There is a problem though... a big one. Buddy is married to Ellie and she is not stepping aside for his grand plans. Buddy solved this bump in the road by killing Ellie. Meanwhile Tom (Robert Conrad) tells Karen that Buddy is married. Buddy then meets with Karen and, once it is clear she is over him, he tries to kill her. The police and Tom intervene in the nick of time. Tom gets to beat Buddy up in a long barroom fight.
This episode and the next one feature characters intending marriage after a 48 hour courtship. Must be something in the mai tais. It works out better in the next outing. The irony is that everyone says Buddy had the talent to make it. He just didn't have the patience.
The cast is good. John Gabriel is forever the professor in the unaired Gilligan's Island pilot before being replaced by Russell Johnson. He still had a busy career. Jean Byron had the same. Myrna Hansen lasted 20 years and is still alive as of this writing. So is Connie Stevens (Cricket) from the main cast.
Many would consider this show cheesy but you have to judge it by 1960 standards. Doing that, this show is fine and was the first of a wave of PI/cop shows from Hawaii that continue to this day with NCIS Hawaii. A good way to pass an hour if you like old time tv.
