- A coach is attacked by Indians, but the attack is interrupted by the arrival of three deserters from the Army. They kill two of the Indians, but also the wounded coachman, and steal the coach. In Tucson they happen to meet Buck Cannon, who hires them as cowboys for the High Chaparral. Their first commission is to herd the cattle during night. When they have left the ranch, a troop of the US Cavalry arrives. Captain Dabney says that he wants to interview the three men. The soldiers, accompanied by Big John and his men, ride out to find the three deserters, but find only one of them, tortured and killed by the Indians. Some soldiers capture three Apaches and bring them to the ranch. Chief Cochise and his warriors respond by capturing some soldiers and one of Big John's men, and line them up in front of the High Chaparral. They will let them go, if the three Indian prisoners are handed over to them. The captain refuses, because he thinks that you cannot trust promises made by Indians. Big John orders Blue to liberate the three Indians secretly, and bring them to Chief Cochise for exchange of prisoners.—Maths Jesperson {maths.jesperson1@comhem.se}
