- Treachery and murder result after a bonded bank messenger, his wife, and an accomplice steal a $20,000 payroll.
- Bonded messenger Henry Wigram is betrayed and murdered by John Grolier, his accomplice in a plot to steal a $20,000 payroll. Planning to abscond with all the money, Grolier is unpleasantly surprised to learn that Wigram had previously handed the money off to his wife Alma before the two men met to stage a fake "robbery". Dan Mathews and his officers are surprised when Alma seems more distracted than upset when she learns that her husband is missing and they deduce that she knows more about the situation than she is letting on. Alma underestimates Grolier's ruthlessness when she tries to use the money as leverage to learn her husband's whereabouts. When Dan finds Alma's murdered body at the Maple Leaf Motel, he realizes that Grolier has probably gone to the Wigram home to search for the money. Dan heads quickly to the Wigram home, where an armed confrontation with the frustrated and desperate Grolier becomes inevitable.—Sam Spear
- The narrator explains how common it was for messenger services to deliver currency to businesses and it was the job of the Highway Patrol to protect it. Deliveries were made through armored car or messenger service and one such delivery was from the Bonded Messenger Service, an employee named Henry Wigram. Henry began his commute by travelling to the Western Boiler plant destination, slowing down long enough to toss the currency parcel off the highway for his waiting spouse Alma to collect. He proceeded along the route until he stops to meet John Grolier, where they had planned on staging an assault and robbery. Grolier gets in Wigram's car, driving off the road, then he has Henry shoot his six cartridges into the ground, they discuss the staged robbery events, he asks Henry for the money bag, tells him to keep his gun, and fires three shots from his own gun into Henry, killing him instantly. Grolier leaves with the bag, and Henry's dead body remains with his car.
At HQ, Dan gets an APB on Wigram travelling with twenty-thousand dollars payroll money reported missing, a description is given by Dan to the dispatcher. Sergeant Larrabee tells Dan his call is the company reporting the money missing and the driver. Grolier has pulled over to find the bag he was handed contained only newspaper, no currency. Ralph Wilson, owner of the Bonded Messenger Company enters HQ giving Dan more information on Henry Wigram; a ten-year employee with a clean record. Dan calls the house to speak with Alma Wigram; she says she will wait for him to arrive; she informs Dan she heard from the bank; Henry had not arrived at his destination. Grolier pulls in at the Maple Leaf motel, calls Alma, claiming the money must have been taken by her, playing him for a patsy. He threatens her with the police; demanding they meet at the motel to split the money at four PM. She says they never intended to double-cross, she tells him she has the bag here in the house, they had planned the transfer all along, but they did not know Grolier, and did not trust him, thinking that he would leave with the money once the phony robbery was perpetrated.
Dan visits the Wigram home discussing Henry's possible whereabouts with his wife Alma. She provides his background as a good employee, honest and the stable environment they have made together. Dan looks skeptical while listening, he leaves, calls HQ for background on Wigram. Alma contacts Grolier through the motel's switchboard and manager; Grolier calls her back from the pay phone outside. The conversation gets heated in a hurry with Alma demanding to know what happened to her husband. Grolier says the plan changed, he decided to tie Henry up, Alma says Henry should have called the police by now, continuing to want to know what actually went down when the men met. Grolier insists she meet him at the motel with the money, promising to tell her exactly where Henry is.
The narrator explains the search continued for the messenger and the twenty-thousand-dollar payroll; the search was along the stretch of highway travelled to Henry's final destination. Ralph Wilson shows at HQ again saying he was empty for ideas on Henry's location. Wilson vouches for Henry's integrity where he co-signed a note for a first-cousin, who has defaulted on the note. Dan tells Wilson now there is a motive. A call comes in alerting the officers Wigram's body was found, shot dead. Alma leaves in her car, likely for the motel, unaware her husband is dead. Dan goes to the spot Wigram was killed, telling Sergeant Walters he thought Henry was their man; the lab boys will be there to lift any prints available, providing a clue where the money went. They agree when they find the money, they will find the killer. Dan also mentioned to Walters he would have to inform Mrs. Wigram her husband was killed.
The hotel manager sees Grolier come out of his cabin, look at the road like he was expecting someone and walk to the payphone; whoever he called was not responding. Dan goes to the Wigram home, no answer at the door. Alma arrives at the motel. Dan learns from Sgt. Larrabee phone calls from the Wigram home were frequent to the Maple Leaf motel. Dan dispatches a plainclothes officer to the motel, for surveillance. Alma and Grolier argue over her not bringing the money because she should have heard from her husband by now. Grolier says he hit Henry, tied him up in his car, she should hear from him later. Grolier explains that was the plan all along. Grolier grills her about the money location, stating they will both go prison if they do not leave soon. Alma listens to Grolier plead for the money while Sergeant Walters spots her car outside the motel lot, calls it into Dan, who is in route. Alma informs Grolier the money is in the house where it will stay until she learns her husband is safe. Grolier stands behind her with his tie stretched between his clenched hands.
Dan stops by the motel, checks with the manager, learns about Grolier leaving recently giving Dan a description of his car; he tells Dan there was no woman with him when he drove away. Dan goes to cabin seven, finds the strangled Alma Wigram. Larrabee calls Dan informing of the Grolier car description entering the Wigram house, spotted by the stakeout; Dan's orders are to arrest the man if he leaves the house, suspicion of murder; send the coroner and lab boys to the motel, number seven, victim is Alma Wigram.
Dan arrives at the house, the plainclothes officer meets him, stating the suspect is still inside; they cover the exits of the home, plainclothes covering the back. Guns drawn, Dan rattles the front door lock, Grolier fires at the door, then slips out the side window to his car with the officer firing at him, while Dan breaks into the house. Grolier fires shots at the officer, gets into his car firing at Dan, he backs out of the driveway, runs into Walters' car, is captured and cuffed by Walters. Grolier came back to the house he tells Dan to look for the money, saying it was a double-cross all the way around. Walters says he answered the call at the motel, he wasn't needed, he came down here; he brought the knitting bag he hands to Dan. Dan pulls the stolen money from the knitting bag, ordering the officers to take Grolier away as he walks back to the house.
Chief Dan Mathews closes the episode with remember, it isn't the car that kills, it's the driver.
