What a man needs to protect the most is his domain, and I'm not talking about just the garage, but the entire house as well. One can never be too cautious because when you least expect it, somebody might try to break in and steal your most valuable possessions. That's what gets the ball rolling on tonight's Home Improvement, for after Tim installs an exhaust fan that sucks rather than blows, he notices the cops over at Wilson's. Upon investigation, he learns Wilson had a break in, and they stole some irreplaceable items: his cheek extender from Fiji, his stuffed cow's hoof, and the most priceless of all, his African mucous cup. Tim relays the news to the guys down at the hardware store and figures maybe it's time the Tool Man got himself a security system. They all get busy, grabbing cameras, alarms, sensors, the works. It all goes great until Marty brings up the exhaust fan, at which point Tim puts on the brakes and remembers how he promised Jill the next modification he made to the house would be basic. Well, when has that ever stopped him before? So, Tim comes home with a basic home security system and Jill's reaction was unheard of: she wanted him to go bigger. Go crazy and get the most outrageous security system he could...AND she would even let him film a Tool Time in the house setting it up. Man, Wilson's break-in must have REALLY struck a chord. So, Tim rushes back to the hardware store.
There's a B plot about Brad cheating on his test by buying the answers from Jason. Yeah, Jason's back, unfortunately. You'd think after the trouble he caused Brad with that party he wouldn't want anything to do with him again. The little wienerhead has also still managed to convince Tim he's a hardware fan and that he watches Tool Time. How did Tim fall for that one again? So, on to the show. Before they install the security system, Tim and Al bring in a "reformed" burglar to help test out the front door. He jimmys it open easily, using Tim's credit card, by lifting his wallet. So finally, after messing around with the cameras, the sensors and Al getting the alarm blasted in his ear, it was finally all set up. And easy to use...if you're capable of remembering 10-digit combinations for every setting. Naturally, just like car alarms, the only ones who will be setting off this alarm are the owners. First up, when Brad sneaks downstairs in the middle of the night to get the test answers left on the front porch by Jason, he triggers the alarm. A loud cacophony of bells, whistles, flashing lights and Tim's voice saying the police were on the way. This goes on for days, accidentally setting off the uber-sensitive alarm by any means. Finally, Wilson speaks up, voicing his extreme distaste for his latest bout of "Timsomnia" and presents the Taylors with a petition signed by every one of their neighbors against their new alarm system. So finally, Tim relents and they do another Tool Time, removing the fancy alarm system and going with a more moderate one. This one includes just a security camera over the front porch, where Brad and Jason happen to be conveniently expositing how Brad doesn't want to cheat on the test and Jason still thinks Tim is a big tool. How many times have you heard someone's car alarm go off and notice it was by way of the owner trying to get into his/her own car? Some people do go overboard, trying to remain secure, hence the reason the Taylors got such an elaborate system. Well, it was either that or buy a gun. But then if Jill allowed that, Tim would've bought a Binford 6100 UZI that fires 1200 rounds in 1.5 seconds. It would cut through a California redwood before you can grunt. But anyway, if you know someone who has themselves an overblown security system and they keep setting it off themselves, or you do it yourself, you can definitely relate to this episode. It's funny, it's got a great message, but it does leave one burning question: did Wilson ever get his mucous cup back?
