Never trust a man who gives you a cold coffee

Season 7 was terribly disappointing by Homicide standards, with weak characters and sloppy writing. Still, there were a few bright spots, like this episode directed by Kathryn Bigelow.

Mike Giardello (Giancarlo Esposito), son of Gee and FBI agent, faces a desperate man (Ron Eldard) who threatens to kill himself and his children; Gee Jr has to talk him out of the increasingly dangerous situation.

Lines of Fire features solid writing and interesting performances by Esposito and Eldard. Although the excuse to put Gee Jr in the spotlights feels contrived... much like in the rest of the season, after all.

The Mike Giardello/Gharty duo - the intense, self-righteous young man and the sloppy, bitter, aging bigot - works well once again, like in the surprisingly good Shades of Gray; the uncompromising ending is memorable.
