No job is worth that

Stakeout is a gem, one of those character-drived episodes you could choose to represent the whole series. The Homicide Squad sets up a stakeout to catch a murderer: the script focuses on the interplay between detectives, as they muse over their job and personal lives. Writing is excellent, with vivid dialogues and sharp characterization.

As hours pass by, problematic Bayliss (Kyle Secor) thinks about quitting Homicide, while his cold partner Pembleton (Andre Braugher) is both irked and concerned. Cynical Munch (Richard Belzer) comments on his disappointment about friends. Captain "Gee" Giardello (Yaphet Kotto) realizes he is probably going to miss his daughter's wedding, which he wasn't sure he wanted to attend in the first place.

Captivating, expertly paced, directed with a sure hand by veteran John McNaughton, Stakeout is one of the best episodes of the series.
