The North Korean "MiGs" are Northrop F-5Ns, formerly of the Swiss Air Force, used by the US Navy to simulate MiG-21s for "aggressor" training.
The USS Reprisal (CV-59) is actually the USS Forrestal (CV-59), the U.S.'s first super carrier. Forrestal was decommissioned 11 Sep 1993. Stock footage of other carriers, such as USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) also make appearances.
Some of the F14 shots were taken from the movie "Top Gun" (Specially the dog fight scenes) and "The Final Countdown" (The general quarters scenes)
This episode centers around the testing of a new type of AMRAAM missile as well as the new variant of the F-18. The F-18 Super Hornet was built by Boeing and intended to replace the aging fleet of F-14 Tomcats as the primary carrier capable fighter of the US Navy. The Super Hornet is based off the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet, but is larger and has more advanced electronic warfare technology. The Super Hornet was first flown in 1995 and was in the process of capability testing at the time this episode takes place. It formally entered service in 1999 and began replacing the F-14 Tomcat on carriers, the last of which were retired in September of 2006. As of September of 2022 the Super Hornet is the backbone of the US Navy's carrier launched fighters, and in 2019 was joined by the new advanced F-35C Lightning, a single-seat multi-role attack aircraft that is replacing the aging F-18 Hornet fleet.
This episode supposedly takes place aboard USS Reprisal (CV-35) -
Construction of Reprisal was canceled on August 12, 1945 when 52.3% complete. Launched in 1945 without ceremony to clear the slipway, her hull was utilized in experimental work in the Chesapeake Bay from 1946-48 (mostly to do with bomb damage in magazines). Although inspected during January 1949 with a view to completing her as an attack carrier, the plan was dropped and her hulk was sold on August 2, 1949 to Boston Metals Co., Baltimore, Md. She was scrapped starting in November 1949.
