Don's Anniversary was a greatly humorous special episode of "The Jack Benny Program" saluting 27 years of being Jack's announcer
tavm2 September 2009
Just watched on YouTube this special episode of "The Jack Benny Program". Why is this one special? Well, as the title indicates, it has Jack giving his announcer of 27 years his own episode as he gives Don a crown (which is a little heavy on him) and his own royal chair (which collapses when he sits on it). We also see a flashback to when Jack first met Don when Benny was auditioning for an announcer for his radio show when his sponsor (Howard McNear) wanted someone other than Jack to do commercials for the Universal Corset Company. The first two potentials are actual announcers Roy Rowan and Bill Baldwin. They're both pretty good. Then Don comes along and sounds bored when reading the titles before laughing at Jack's jokes. He gets hired but has to take elocution lessons from Nancy Kulp and ballet lessons from Leonid Kinskey. Oh, and I forgot to mention that before the flashback, The Sportsmen Quartet sings a special song for Don. Anyway, before the show ends newsman John Daly presents Don with a plaque before...You'll just have to watch the episode to find out how the whole thing ends. Quite hilarious especially during Don's dancing "lesson". Despite the end, this was quite a humorously touching episode that should please many fans of this longtime duo of Jack Benny and Don Wilson.
