Dieting Pains

Warning: Spoilers
Warning don't read unless seen episode.

This episode is an honorable mention, I like that it tackles the subject matter on dieting which isn't really that common in the comedy genre, nor always tackled maturely. The episode sort of reminds me of the 80's dramedy film "Fatso" which starred Dom DeLuise, just like in that film the protagonist is struggling to maintain his diet.

This is also another Graham focused episode and one of his best in my book. Really like the time in that diet seminar, like the philosophical moto they have which is "eat to live, not live to eat" which I believe is true and should be; that food should just be a source to replenish energy we need to get though our day but also to simply be hungry to live life the way we want to. There is a moment when we see in the seminar it gets to warning about certain character types in dieting which is the Braggot and it's funny how we see Graham inadvertently falls into that type.

Graham we see is struggling just going through the motions of the first night as he exercises he is struggling to not eat certain foods to maintain his diet. This is funny because it's true how much of a struggle maintain diet let alone kicking off addiction truly is and one of them is to not eat certain foods or at least too much of it that may taste good but aren't always good for your physical health. Really like two scenes from seeing Graham almost buying a pie from a convenience store, but also a noir like montage as we see plenty of neon lighted sights that advertise food pass him buy. That I can't help but feel slightly satires on our food culture how it's constantly advertised on how attractive it all is and thrown at us everyday which makes the abstinence of certain foods all the more difficult.

The seminar guy is right in what he says about the Bragots that won't make it the first night proves to be true, as we see Graham slowly but surely gives in. It was just hilarious as he opens up the Church food supply refrigerator door and there is a big light that fills the room and then Graham says my favorite line "Thank you God!", yeah anyone feeling great relief would say that.

And of course, we see both Graham and even Cindy just gorges on whatever they see. However, this all was just one big empty delight as we see Graham feels guilty and ashamed of himself for giving in. But what I really like is how understanding Elisabeth is as an old saying goes "Rome wasn't built in a day." Yes, Graham didn't make it the first night but that doesn't make him weak it only makes him human and just means that he's got a lot of work ahead of him and Graham feeling bad about the aftermath is a good sign showing that he does have integrity and hasn't given up as he really does want to work on his dieting.

I like that it makes the episode hopeful but have a good message showing how you can't expect anything achieved overnight. That losing weight, kicking off addiction, or anything else to bring and maintain good heath is a constant work in progress, but as long as don't give up and you keep your goals in mind clear and strong, you can make it.

Rating: 3 and a half stars.
