The hunted

'Law and Order: Special Victims Unit's' Season 6 was for me the best and most consistent Season 6 of the three main shows in the 'Law and Order' franchise (the others being the original 'Law and Order' and 'Criminal Intent', the latter of which having a pretty hit and miss Season 6). Up to this episode, and including it, there had not in my view been an episode that below good, though "Doubt" is polarising (personally liked the episode but its biggest interest point didn't quite come off.

"Quarry" continues the exceptionally high quality shown in all the previous episodes in another excellent episode. Almost everything is brilliant about it, especially the emotional impact, its approach to the very sensitive subject matter, Mariska Hargitay and John Savage, and even the thing that stops "Quarry" from being a perfect score isn't that catastrophic. It is not quite one of my very favourite episodes of the season, but it is very close.

The production values as ever are slick and with the right amount of muted grit, the photography doesn't try to do anything too fancy or gimmicky while not being claustrophobic and keeping things simple. The music doesn't overbear with the theme tune still memorable. The direction doesn't let the tension slip while still giving enough breathing space to the drama. The script is a mix of thought-provoking, unsettling and raw emotion, all wrapped up in a taut, very appetising and not too neat package.

Really admired that "Quarry" was another story that deals with a heavy subject in a pull no punches way, but avoids going too heavy handed and mushy. Everything with the trophies was truly disturbing, the interaction with Briggs chills and engrosses and the truth is a massive shock and made me feel both angry and sad on first viewing and still feel this way.

Olivia plays a great role in "Quarry", authoritative and conflicted without being over-angsty. Her (too briefly seen) chemistry with Stabler is sweet. Mariska Hargitay is excellent, but am going to agree that Savage's magnificently spine chilling performance is the highlight.

For my liking, there were a couple too many twists later on, which complicated the story a little.

In conclusion, truly excellent. 9/10

A really cold case
bkoganbing8 November 2013
John Savage dominates this SVU story with his portrayal of a serial child molester on death row in Virginia. Among the cast members Mariska Hargitay takes the lead in uncovering possibly another one of his victims from some 20 years ago in New York City.

This all starts when she's mailed a photograph of a Little League baseball field and the picture of a child gone missing a score of years ago. Sure enough the child's body is in a grave there. Is it however the work of Savage.

When he was free Savage was a former minor league ballplayer who also went into Little League coaching. When Hargitay visits him in Virginia though he's responsible for well over 100 sex offenses, Savage denies this one, the kid was way below puberty and Savage did not have any kind of desires for kids that young, so he says.

It turns out he's right and Olivia and the squad have a really cold case to heat up and find the right perpetrator.

Savage in his portrayal is both pitiable and repellent not an easy pair of emotions for a player to convey. He does a magnificent job and he's the reason this SVU story is so memorable.

Gripping Episode

One of my favorite episodes ever and easily why Season 6 is one of the best seasons which makes this show so great.

Savage's scene in the jail cell with the hats is great writing & acting. It's disturbing, yet must see at the same time.

Warning: Spoilers
One of the best season 6 episodes. John Savage is brilliantly creepy as Lucas Biggs, the serial child molester/murderer who is the original suspect in the 25 years earlier murder of Jeffrey Ronson. The scene where he identifies the owners of the caps from his storage locker is chilling. He is also compelling when he shows a little humanity later. Savage is matched by the powerful performance of Michael Shannon as the man who tries to lead Benson to Deacon Bring, who really killed Jeffrey and also molested Avery as a boy. Terry Serpico is convincingly evil in the small role of Deacon It is incredibly moving when you find out how Avery removed himself from his girlfriend when he found out she was pregnant. Mariska Hargitay's scenes with. Savage are unforgettable.

This one goes to the supporting cast. especially John Savage

Warning: Spoilers
This one definitely left its mark you our conscious once it was over. So much reality and angst throughout without giving to much away. As the story unfolds in the 43 minutes you are sucked into this story and mystery of the crime. Even the opening of this episode steered away from the unusual bystanders find a victim - detectives arrive to scene formula. You already get a feeling from the start that this one is going to be different.

Probably one of my favorite best supporting casts in any of the seasons. But my favorite was the portrayal of our villain awaiting deathrow execution. Mr. Savage's acting was probably the most reserved yet one of the creepiest I have seen on the show. Watch it for him and the always engaging Mariska (Oliva B). This episode hits all the emotions because it is steeped in the reality of the human condition and it effects to trauma. Watch this one!
