A classmate of Beaver's, Linda Dennison, has the hots for him but Beaver, naturally, wants no part of girls. However, one day while he's walking across the town park, she calls him. She's up in the tree and invites him to come up and see the bird's nest. He reluctantly climbs up, spends a few minutes with her and climbs down. His pals Larry and Whitey come by and tease him about being with a girl.
It gets worse. Rumors at school about he and Linda (who can't stop staring at Beaver) make life rough for Beaver, who is now teased by everyone else in the class for "being sweet on her." Thee dare him to call Linda a mean name to prove he isn't sweet on her. Kids are mean, nasty and even cruel at times as everyone sadly knows. Well, Beaver follows through with that plan, needlessly hurts the girl with an insult, instantly knows he did wrong and punches Larry Mondello. He then gets sent down the principal's office.
Later, of course, Ward finds out the story and straightens things out, with the help of a speech the next day in class by Miss Landers. Ironically, the show ends with Beaver spotting Linda and Larry sitting in that same tree. It makes Beaver feel kind of sad and then wondering why he feels bad even he doesn't like the girl. He tells that to Wally who says he gets the same feeling when he sees Mary Ellen Rogers with another guy even though he doesn't like her. I guess that's how people get married, surmises Wally.
I guess you could spend a couple of classes discussing the human characteristics demonstrated in this episode, but I just want a fun, entertaining show and this really didn't meet that criteria. It also was the second time in three weeks that Beaver hurt a nice kid's feelings. They could have spaced those two similar themes better than what they did.
