It is election time. Since Mayor Hoover has declined to run again, Judge Tobin asks Earp to help persuade Jim Kelley to run for mayor against Slip Madigan, who wants an open town. Kelley agrees to run and initially supports Earp as his friend. His campaign advisers tell Kelley Earp is hurting him, so Kelley tells Earp he plans to say he will fire him if elected but then change his decision after he is elected. Earp, sensing he is hurting Kelley's chances, decides to resign from office immediately. Kelley wins the election and appoints a young Dave Doral as the new marshal. The cowboys take advantage of the new marshal's inexperience, trapping Kelley in his store. Judge Tobin steps in to find a solution to the situation.
