Arizona convicted felons are sent to Yuma prison which has a hard reputation. Prisoners who escape are tracked and killed by Apaches rather than recaptured so the guards can split the reward. In Tombstone Sheriff Johnny Behan has a theft case against Tom Grover with Pat Few as a witness against him. Tom's wife Beth confronts Behan with a revolver but Earp intervenes. Behan lets the episode go and Earp has no jurisdiction. Beth tells Earp Tom is being framed by Behan. Earp agrees to talk to Judge Spicer who based on the evidence given sentences Tom to three years in Yuma. Tom secretly tells Earp the conviction is retribution for going against the Ten Percent Ring and Beth marrying him instead of Behan. Earp knows prisoners often don't make it to Yuma so he tells Tom not to escape as he will follow Tom. Behan tells the guards he doesn't want Tom making it to Yuma. The guards fall asleep at night to let the three prisoners escape but the next morning Tom is still there. Earp stops them from shooting Tom and now has a federal case due to the Apaches to go after and a way to clear Tom.
