THE LIFE AND LEGEND OF Wyatt Earp – Bank Robbers - 1955

This is episode ten of the 1955-1961 western series starring Hugh O'Brian as Wyatt Earp.

Bank hold gang led by Robert Lowery and Rita Lynn are holed up outside of Wichita. Lowery is doing poorly as he suffers from a bad gunshot wound to his leg. He decides to break up the gang. Just his girl, Lynn, and himself, will ride into Wichita. There are no warrants out in Kansas so the law should leave him alone.

They grab a hotel room and call the doc, Douglas Fowley. Fowley fixes up the wound and tells him to rest for week. Fowley reports the gunshot wound to town Marshal, Wyatt Earp. Earp (Hugh O'Brian) pays a visit to Lowery and Lynn. As long as they behave themselves, the law will leave them alone.

The next day the other members of the gang ride into town. They figure to pull a holdup no matter what ex-leader Lowery had said. Lowery informs O'Brian that he best be alert. His old gang is not here to take in the sights. Lowery is sick of the life wants to retire. O"Brian of course does not believe him, and assumes if a hold up is coming, Lowery planned it.

The still bedridden Lowery sends the handy with a pistol, Lynn, to try and talk sense into O'Brian. Just then the gang strikes, Lynn draws fast and shoots the gunman preparing to back shoot O'Brian. O'Brian does not need to be told twice and rallies the deputies and runs to the bank. Numerous rounds are exchanged in a less than friendly manner. Most of the hold-up bunch are soon wounded, or chewing dirt. The only one to get away is Leonard Penn. He is blasted out of his saddle by Lowery as he gallops past his hotel window.

An excellent episode that had the writing talents of Frank Gruber to thank for it's better than average pace and story. Gruber worked on the novels, stories or screenplays of, NORTHERN PURSUIT, THE MASK OF DIMITRIOS, JOHNNY ANGEL, TERROR BY NIGHT, FIGHTING MAN OF THE PLAINS, THE CARIBOO TRAIL, THE Texas RANGERS, WARPATH, SILVER CITY, PONY EXPRESS, RAGE AT DAWN, BACKLASH, TENSION AT TABLE ROCK and THE BIG LAND.
