Newsreels and M*A*S*H
safenoe10 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The newsreel footage gives us a slice of history, the roaring 50s juxtaposed with the "Police Emergency" in Korea. We see the tragedy of troops losing their lives before they even had a chance on the operating table. If you have time, listen to the M*A*S*H Matters podcast hosted by Jeff Maxwell (who played Igor) and Ryan Patrick.

The Chinese Get Into the Action
Hitchcoc15 March 2015
A very good episode as they alternate 1950's newsreels with actual work being done by the MASH doctors. The Chinese have gotten into the act big time and the casualties are piling up; so much so that the camp is running out of everything, from surgical gloves to plasma. This is one of the episodes where the war takes on a character of its own and the men and women who are working are secondary. Of course, the newsreel footage is designed to show an absurd comparison as they show ping pong playing cats, dance competitions, and a speech by Douglas MacArthur. Radar spends time trying to make trades with his counterparts for plasma, running through the entire quartermaster's supply list. Then the rain comes.
