- The 4077 is awash in mumps. One early morning, Colonel Potter feels lumpy and sweaty; Father Mulcahy feels responsible for exposing 4077 staff to Sister Theresa's Orphanage mumps epidemic. Margaret supports her CO on his way to his tent --and quarantine. Any person who wasn't exposed to mumps as a kid (This includes Klinger and Winchester), is now at risk. The timing could not have been worse as the 4077th is expecting a swarm of casualties the next day. Potter orders Klinger to ask I-Corps to send in a temporary surgeon to cover for Potter. Charles walks in to the mess tent and accuses Potter of being intoxicated that early in the morning; When he finds its mumps, he laughs at a childhood malady affecting a man of his advanced years.
Hawkeye and BJ razz Charles about his blue blood and genes. Winchester claims that he is immune to Mumps due to his superior genes, but then has to bunk with Potter when he gets them. Winchester cannot be put in the VIP tent as it is full of sick nurses. Potter has a sears super comfy mattress, which he refuses to share with Winchester. Klinger is as manic in the quest for cleanliness as he was for Section 8. Margaret is determined to get her CO well.
I Corp sends Captain Stephen J. Newsome (Edward Herrmann) to pinch hit for Potter. Stephan is stationed in Tokyo. He is a highly regarded Eye, Ears and Leg man. Being from Chicago, Charles assumes he attended Al Capone U but Steve has Charles gulping with his next words: John Hopkins. Everyone likes Steve--he is an old campaigner who saw action at bloody Pusan Perimeter. There were 16,000 casualties in 18 months and Steve operated on bumpy roads in moving vehicles. Once he removed 12 pounds of shrapnel from a leg in a moving jeep, with a local anesthetic, about one minute ahead of the North Koreans. An OR session goes sideways, reminding the officers about the dangers of the jobs they do so well. Stephen panics looking at so many mutilated bodies and freezes in the middle of the OR. He walks out and straight into Potter's tent. He sits in a corner and when asked only replies that the blood doesn't come off his hands.. He is off his rocker.. Potter asks Klinger to call Sidney to help Stephen.
Potter and Winchester get on each other's nerves in Potter's tent. Winchester wins every game of gin, and then listens to opera (which Potter hates). Winchester gargles and wakes up Potter early in the morning. Winchester is worried that mumps can make a man sterile. Potter assures him that he had a mild infection, a lot of medicines and plenty of rest. Odds are there wont be any permanent damage. Potter is so angry with Winchester's opera that he throws out his vinyl record. Eventually they work out how to co-exist (Potter gets earmuffs). Just as things appear settled, Klinger walks in and is quarantined too.
