- It's the day of Klinger's hearing before a special court martial. Will Klinger be sent up the river? With Charles as his attorney, it's almost certain. Meanwhile, Hawkeye and B.J. set out to catch the real thief.
- The US army believes that there is a big crime ring behind the thefts and that Klinger will lead them to the bigger sharks in the pond. Klinger is offered that he gives 2 names, and the charges against him will be dropped.
It's the day of Klinger's hearing before a special court martial. Klinger has to get a defense lawyer, and it can only be an officer. Klinger begs Hawkeye, but he is witness for the prosecution. He cannot represent Klinger due to the conflict of interest. Plus they have forced Hawkeye to appear as a witness by issuing him a subpoena. Klinger wants Hawkeye as he can talk anyone into anything. Winchester jumps to Klinger's aid and agrees to be his lawyer. A lawyer is a graduate student who couldn't get into Medical school. Winchester doesn't believe Klinger is innocent, his sole concern is with winning the case. The first syllable of Winchester is "Win".. Klinger is convinced. Winchester rehearses his defense. However, the defense has no witnesses when Margaret keeps giggling at her written testimony (praising Klinger's character and calling him the glue that binds the unit) and Mulcahy is pissed when he figures out that the 18 bibles Klinger got him "like a miracle" were stolen from a Seoul hotel. Mulcahy was presenting this anecdote to bolster's Klinger's case, but Winchester points out that the "miracle" was the Klinger stole the bibles.
Meanwhile, Hawkeye and B.J. set out to catch the real thief. They talk loudly and everywhere about an expensive tape recorder that Winchester has purchased (mess tent, showers, latrines, Rosie's bar and so on). Money is object to Winchester. He is the only American who landed in Incheon with Traveler's checks and so on. Charles paid more than $200 for that tape recorder. They saw a used one in Seoul for $250. They then find that Winchester had given the tape-recorder to Klinger to commit his testimony to memory.
The trial starts. Winchester is pompous as usual. Potter and Margaret have stayed back at the 4077 to cater to any wounded. Winchester is confident of a win when he sees that the prosecution lawyer Captain Rollins (Jack Blessing) is a young boy barely few months into his job. Rollins is quite adept at his job. He questions Hawkeye and establishes that Klinger left the OR to pick up the penicillin and had ample time to steal the Polaroid from the Swamp. Klinger cant explain how the MPs could not find the black market mere 30 mins after when Klinger claims to have purchased the camera from there. All of Winchester's objections are over-ruled and all of his questions are struck from record, as leading/immaterial. The trial is about to be over and Klinger is about to be pronounced guilty. BJ and Hawkeye return to the 4077th. Klinger wants Rollins to handle his appeal
Back in MASH 4077, Potter stages a fake OR (as BJ and Hawkeye figured out that all the thefts took place when they were in surgery), when a MP enters the swamp to steal the tape-recorder and stash it behind the mess tent, only this time Hakweye and BJ take his photos with their Polaroid. They rush to the court martial to present their evidence and Klinger is released. The MP is taken into custody for further proceedings. An MP comes by to question Mulcahy about the stolen bibles.
