Despite his bumblings and being a whipped husband and acting like an 18-year-old kid around women, Medavoy is actually a decent cop. But when it comes time to get down and dirty, he's not the guy you want doing an interview.
Of all the Sipowicz interviews, this one is my all-time favorite.
Gina has been brutally slashed with a knife during an attempted rape. Of course, Martinez is out of his skull, and we can certainly relate given how sweet Gina is.
Lt. Fancy wants a confession from the guy, and he sees that Medavoy is unlikely to get it. As soon as he tells Medavoy that he wants Andy to talk to him, I was like, "Yes!" And as soon as Andy stepped into the room, I was already smiling and chuckling because you knew what was going to go down.
I've said it before that Sipowicz is a guy you want in the trenches. He's the guy--where if something happened to you--you'd want on the case because he'd find a way to get the job done. We understand that cops have to abide by the law, but sometimes, you wish there was more thought for the victim and getting justice. Sipowicz is a guy who wear's his heart on his sleeve when it comes to the victims. And he's the guy we know will ultimately set things right. He's the guy who's got your back.
To see Sipowicz playing it calm and cool before delivering that first smack was a thing of beauty. Little does the skell know who he's dealing with until Sipowicz is mashing the guy's head into the table.
I also liked the conversation between Sipowicz and Medavoy as Medavoy clearly doesn't condone that type of "tuning up" the perp. Sipowicz, of course, makes no apologies but simply explains to Medavoy why he does it, and also why it works when it's absolutely necessary. Kelly explains the same thing to Martinez in Season 1.
This is one of the episodes that reminds me why I love Andy Sipowicz so much. And I'm sure that if Gina found out how Sipowicz got the guy to confess, she wouldn't have a problem with it either.
