Simone Steps In
Hitchcoc21 August 2021
Diane doesn't want someone else controlling her life. Even Bobby, who is a bit over the top with her. Chris Meloni is a great bad guy, with his perpetual smirk and psychotic bent. I never quite understood where Diane, undercover, was trying to get to. She would have been killed. There's a case of a young boy who witnesses something awful. Then, the artist returns, having developed a rapport with Andy who doesn't have a clue what this guy is talking about. There is also Simone's promotion, ignoring Andy's contributions.

Addiction to Attention
spasek15 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
We now live in a world where there are more attention addicts than ever before. With the internet and social media, people are literally coming out of the woodworks to post pictures or do whatever else they can get just for a small sliver of acknowledgement.

The sad part is--like anything else people are addicted to--that attention is fleeting. It never lasts beyond the acknowledgement. And what's worse is that many people feel that any attention--even negative or abusive attention--is better than nothing at all.

Detective Russell is unable to see that she is in way over her head on her undercover case with Liery. And if she didn't have feelings for Simone, one can't help but wonder what she might have done. Liery drugged and date-raped her (although he denies having touched her, but we have a hard time believing that). She's upset, but not nearly as angry or upset as most women would be.

Russell finally confides in Simone at the end of this episode about her addiction to attention. Her father loved and doted on her. She wouldn't wear a coat or a jacket in cold weather because it would ruin her figure. We can also see how these things ultimately led her to become an alcoholic.

Such people are incapable of being happy because they dislike themselves so much. We can understand why she was unable to say "yes" to Bobby's marriage proposal. In short, she doesn't feel worthy of it. You can pretty much equate how low a person's self-eesteem is with how much attention they crave and demand. Russell is a prime example of this.

NYPD Blue has always done an exceptional job with its characters, who are multi-dimensional and complex. We see these people evolve, which is what you want from characters in a series.
