Put to the Test
Hitchcoc3 April 2024
My title is focusing on three characters who face certain obstacles. It begins with Ed, who is sort of Maurice's manservant, housesitting while Maurice goes boar hunting. He is fine playing by the rules, but soon becomes the lord of the manor, partying and having friends over. He even loans some of Maurice's stuff out. Holling is convinced by Shelly that they need a house, but he blocks every effort when they find one. His resolve is being tested and he is not doing well. I'm not convinced of this one. The main story takes place in Joel's remote new home. Marilyn comes to visit him and he regresses to his old self, nervous and non-productive. Here is the greatest learning experience of all. Good episode as we roll too the end.

Downward spiral

A fine saga began a trajectory that broke my heart. A rushed race to the finish line. We don't always get the ending that we want. Happy endings many times seem to be the last thing creative people want. I hope Joel's saga would be different. Not so. There is talk of a reboot. If so I political correctness doesn't get in the way. Nowadays it usually does. Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead once said the times are the trip. The nineties were a time of transition in TV. Shows like this, NYPD Blue, and E R were indicative of a more adult approach for story telling. It also was before writers and producers were scared of pushing the envelope. I have high but guarded hopes.

Funny and touching all in one

Warning: Spoilers
This episode had me laughing out loud, Ed acting like Maurice, Maurice walking in on an unsuspecting Ed singing show tunes. Comedy gold. And the beautiful, poignant scenes with the always unlikely pairing of Marilyn and Joel. When they danced together at the end, what a touching good-bye. Perfect episode.
