Life is not going well for Rab and Mary. They are so strapped for cash that Rab has had to pawn his suit and even sing on the streets to make some cash. To make matters worse, Mary's washing machine has gone on the blink.
The Cotter's marriage is on the rocks as well due to Jamesie having an affair with a young girl named Suki ( Amy McKenzie ).
However, a bit of luck comes the Nesbitt's way when Rab wins money from the football pools, however before the cheque comes through Rab decides to borrow money from a loan shark named Sean. Rab is warned by Sean that failure to repay will result in serious consequences. Rab and Mary then embark on a spending spree - Rab buying Mary a new washing machine as well as a new engagement ring. He even goes as far as get himself a perm but it makes him look a right clown.
Later, Rab and Mary book into a fancy hotel for dinner, inviting Ella and Jamesie along in an attempt to help save their marriage but then Suki unexpectedly shows up announcing she is pregnant. Worse to come, Jamesie steals Rab's pools money, meaning Rab is unable to pay his debts to the loan sharks....
Another brilliant offering from the fifth series. Tommy Flanigan ( a lifelong friend of Robert Carlyle ) is Sean the loan shark. With his scarred face and beady eyes, he cuts a very scary figure. Poor Rab takes yet another beating here. Unlike the following episode 'Pie' ( where Rab is beaten up by the 'the lord of the pies' and his mob ), we do not see Rab at the hands of the thugs, but the sight of his bruised, battered, bandaged face spoke volumes. Fortunately, Jamesie is seen to get his comeuppance. When he visits Rab in hospital, Rab grabs him by the throat and throttles him.
Funny though this episode is, it unfortunately invalidates the earlier episode 'Wean' in which Jamesie is unable to start a family due to being infertile. If he was unable to impregnate his own wife, how could be possibly father the child of his bit on the side? He also didn't learn from his mistake here as in series ten episode 'Cuts' he got another girl pregnant though on that occasion the baby is seen to be born.
Funniest bit - Rab has purchased a lottery ticket of which the numbers are 1-2-3-4-5 and 6, however the numbers read out on television are 7-8-9-10-11-12 and 13! Rab's reaction is priceless!
