- Alec is not supportive of Janet's desire to run a business from their home and is too busy to listen to her reasoning. The men's club and the women's group are at odds when the two organizations run simultaneous raffles.
- Each holding a raffle for the same charity at the same time is the latest feud between the Royal Order of the Daughters of the Dominion (RODD) and the Royal Order of the Knights of Prince Edward Island (ROKPEI), the primary women's society and secret men's society in Avonlea respectively. One other issue that the women are discussing is the imminent visit to Toronto of Prince George, the Prince of Wales. They are hoping that he will make a stop in Prince Edward Island. They learn mistakenly that he indeed is doing so, which gets the women making secret preparations for his visit. One other issue the men are discussing is membership recruitment. Simon makes a suggestion about a possible recruit: Felix. With his questions about the group, Felix adds some sobering thoughts amongst the ROKPEI members about the group's existence. Meanwhile, Janet is feeling emotionally lonely with Felicity away at medical school, Felix always at work, Cecily still at the sanitarium and Daniel away on vacation with Aunt Eliza. Wanting to feel useful but with what few skills she feels she possesses, Janet answers an advertisement in a women's magazine to start a home based business. After receiving her first shipment, Janet quickly learns that the business is a sham. Not wanting Alec to bail her out, Janet gets into deeper trouble with every measure she takes to fix it. But Janet's troubles become a meeting point for the RODD and the ROKPEI.—Huggo
