Warning do not read unless seen episode.
This is my forth favorite episode of the show and one of my favorite time travel episodes in general, it's true this episode doesn't really have the same impact anymore, it's one of those event episodes you had to of been there when it happened. But all the same this was a bittersweet episode.
I really like the chemistry between future Max and present-day Liz, Future Max telling the story about their future together, it just fuels our imaginations painting a rather positive and beautiful picture on their future, which makes it more heartbreaking. It's somewhat double layered suspenseful because on one hand you know the gravity of the mission and the importance of why it must succeed, but on another hand, you don't really want it to succeed because the connection between Max and Liz is so sacred and beautiful.
You just see Liz just conflicted about this but also Future Max equally conflict probably more so as you can tell from his voice and even his eyes, he is just broken in emotion knowing what he's sacrificing along with Liz a girl that is just one step close to meeting her destiny.
Even I was conflicted about the whole thing I couldn't help but think, it's not fair why the hell should it end between them. I also couldn't help but think even though their trying to change things for the better, they could make things even worse, they could create a new kind of evil; because the ramifications of changing time are always dangerously unpredictable.
Theme in this episode is about heroism and love and the sacrifices they make for them. It's heartbreaking what great price Liz must pay to save humanity has a whole, which is her time with Max. One thing Future Max says really made my heart sink, "It's for the best." I thought "I hope so Max, because I honestly don't know what is."
The last scene when both the Future Max and present-day Liz dancing was sweet and haunting as it was suppose to be their wedding dance. And then as they continue dancing, we see a little moment when Max is somewhat comforted by Tess, and then at the last moment when Liz twirls and then looks back to see Future Max is gone. It was heart sinking because we see that the one future both Liz and Max had together been gone forever.
However, despite a sad ending, it's also hopeful because the reason why everything went to hell in a handbasket for Max and Liz and the world was because they came together too soon, it doesn't mean they can't be together at all. Sarah Connor once said, 'The future is not set, there is no fate but what we make."
