- Sonny Lee (long-legged, blonde bob-cut Rebecca Chambers) desperately salvages her relationship with Nick's mean-spirited old Dad, Martin Corelli, for the sake of hanging on to her shot at the family fortune. She tells him she had to make sure of her feelings for old flame Nick, but that she realized that she wants only to be with him now. And that she would do anything to earn his forgiveness. Anything. Sly old dog, he takes her up on this promise, and as they embrace, we see the dismay in her eyes. Peyton (wickedly foxy Jamie Luner) is furious with Nick for having thrown away his inheritance. He protests that his father was first to throw a punch. She chides him for such a childish attitude, and keeps citing family values, while we all know just exactly which way the little wheels are spinning in that fox's mind. Reese, (sweetheart Shannon Sturges), the former poster child for naïve pampered rich heiresses, has now been bitten and plans to retaliate in kind. Finally seeing Tom as the lowdown snake he really is having conned her into believing she is married to him, she talks about needing an early night, but promises him a night he'll remember forever once she gets back from her meeting tomorrow. For now though, she pulls that duvet up high over her body. Next morning, Reese sets off to visit that chapel. Nick confronts Sonny Lee about her having been in Tom's room, she explains that she was waiting there for Nick - Tom had set them up, they now realize too late. Cassie comes to see Sam at the police station. They set a date for tomorrow night when she is singing. Sam is looking forward to the date. Just then he gets a mysterious phone call from one Robert Webber, and his entire mood changes. A worried Edward is pacing the floor at his mistress's apartment. Adultery is a felony in the state of Georgia, the photograph of him and Rita is damning evidence, and Eleanor could take him to the cleaners. "Does Eleanor know what you're worth?" Veronica suggests to Edward that the one way to make sure that Eleanor cannot get to his assets, is to hide them from her in a safe deposit box. "Invest in something you can hide." In South Carolina, Reese arrives where the sham marriage took place, and introduces herself as the half-sister of the bride in the photograph. The pleasant old lady tells her how the young couple arrived in the middle of the night anxious to be married as there was a pregnancy involved. Reese introduced herself as Peyton Richards. And we see that she is going to get even. The real Peyton is confronting Tom. He was five minutes late last night, that's why their plan went off the rails. Nick barges in, confronting Tom as well, for having set him up, but Tom explains nonchalantly that he only did it for Peyton's sake, that Nick and Sonny Lee had to come to a resolve. Nick storms out, Tom doesn't care about the jerk, and suggests Peyton do the same, but she still wants a go at the Corelli millions. This time, she visits Martin at his hotel room, to discuss his relationship with his son. At first, Martin wants to close the door in her face - he doesn't have a son anymore. In true Peyton style, she gets him to let her in, 'because she won't bite', the little carnivore! Martin is not somebody to take any advice, even if it had been well-meant, which it of course isn't. "You're the one worried about losing the brass ring!" he surely catches her out. He spitefully signs the codisil leaving Nick penniless in his will, and all Peyton's efforts only makes him more resolute.... Until fate steps in, and he collapses from a massive heart attack. "Mr. Corelli! Mr. Corelli!" Opportunist Peyton tries rifling through his jacket pocket, but he is too heavy for her, and then Sonny Lee enters, and they phone 911. Reese finds the red dress identical to hers in Peyton's closet. Peyton deftly explains she was just being a copycat, having seen how great the dress looked on Reese. But she needn't have bought her own, Reese points out. It's only her husband that's not for sharing. Inwardly, Reese now (quite rightly) thinks of Peyton as a backstabbing piece of white trash. Dean and Sam investigate an attempt at insurance fraud, and the owner of the shop tries bribing Sam, assuming him to be on the take because of his expensive taste in clothes, evoking a violent response, and suggesting Sam is hiding something. At the hospital, Martin is stable but critical. Sonny Lee is phoning the lawyer to find out the state of the will, finds out everything goes to the wife should Martin marry. When Martin comes to, he urges Sonny Lee to stay with him. She insists on getting married. He sees through her in a flash, but ironically is pleased that somebody appreciates his money. Edward hires a safe deposit box at the bank; in the waiting room, a disguised Veronica looks on. Cassie is excitedly preparing for her performance, and wants to look her sexiest for Sam, selecting strappy black high heels, but then, bummer! Sam cancels. Lane fishes for info from partner Dean. Peyton urges Nick to try once more (Martin: "Ten bucks says the redhead put you up to it!"), but Nick's stubborn nature equals that of his Dad, just further raising the old man's ire. "I don't give a damn about anybody who don't give a damn about it!" Nick apologizes only for not having hit him harder, finally sealing the rift. And Martin now calls for a priest, but not for Last Rites, but to get married on his deathbed, just to further spite Nick. Peyton desperately plays for time, and keeps the only available priest in the hospital's chapel, Father Bernard, occupied with a string of confessions from her lurid past in the room across the hall. The old man does a double take on being told the sordid details. "You slept with your sister's boyfriend?" Running out of material, she even relates the goldfish she left to their fate early in this season. To no avail, he hears himself being paged over the intercom, and breaks off from her with the admonition that she should do lots of Hail Mary's. As if even thousands would do.... Edward surfaces from having been occupied with Veronica. "You wear me out, you vixen you!" As soon as he apparently drifts off, we are aware that she has ulterior motives, lying there with predatory eyes. Soon she gets up (looking classy as can be in her elegant nightdress), and goes through his trouser pockets, finding the key. And makes imprints so that it could be duplicated. But Edward is wise to her, lies watching her, and grins gleefully. Sonny Lee marches the priest to Intensive Care, but Martin succumbs to another stroke just before the crucial moment. "Code Blue!" the hospital staff scrambles as a dismayed Peyton stares on aghast. Martin is lost. Sonny Lee loses out. Peyton has only one more chance - find that codicil! She goes off to search through the personal belongings. Veronica is at the keymaker's, who latches on instantly that she is on an unholy quest, and charges her an exorbitant amount for the illegal duplication. Meanwhile, it now becomes clear to the viewer that Edward and Eleanor are back in cahoots, as Eleanor ponders about what they have in store for the traitorous Veronica. Cassie is convinced that Sam is through with her, but Dean discovers that this Robert Webber is his father-in-law - Sam is married. And so is Peyton, legally, to Tom, as Reese finds out, consulting the law. There had been a marriage, not involving her, but Peyton, after all. Impatiently, Peyton urges a hassled candy-striper to find that document, but to no avail. Sonny Lee has it in her hands, and she intends to stay in town, phoning Nick, and keeping the romantic flames burning. Just like those consuming the codicil... Nick is going to be very, very rich. And actively pursued.
