The pilot episode of Smallville is a great start to the series and is indeed one of the best episodes of the first season. It beautifully sets up all of the characters and themes that are continually explored throughout the series.
The story is remarkably faithful to the source material whilst also putting its own spin on things with Lex Luthor being introduced at a much earlier stage of Clark Kent's life than in the comic books. This actually brings much more depth to characters that have been around for so many years, making them seem fresh, and rejuvenating the Superman mythology for a new generation.
As this is the pilot episode it is clear that Warner Brothers went all-out on the budget side of things in order to attract a keen fan base right from the start. It really shows, particularly in the scene where a meteor shower hits Smallville, and the action and special effects really sets the bar quite high for future episodes.
Very entertaining. 10/10
