I'm no expert on espionage stories. I am more of a James Bond type of guy and I am reliably informed that he is not realistic.
What I do know about Berlin is this. In the dying days of World War 2. There was a race by the allied nations to get to Berlin first. The first one there can carve the city up. The Russians not only got a good portion of Berlin, but the eastern part of Germany as well.
Berlin was in communist east europe. Britain, America and France got to occupy what became West Berlin. Here is the thing, you had western soldiers inside East Germany.
This explains why Lufthansa a West German airline had its hub in Frankfurt and Munich in West Germany. The two airports in East and West Berlin were glorified sheds.
So Jordan and Morrissey are on their way to Frankfurt to pick up a British subject called Selby. He disappeared in East Berlin several years ago and recently emerged in West Berlin. Moxon wants to know what he was doing there.
When Jordan and Morrissey arrive at their Frankfurt hotel. There are several hiccups. The loca press know they have arrived and the hotel has only a reservation for one room. It is also the month of the Frankfurt book fair which means all rooms are sold out. The German police inform Jordan and tell him that although Selby himself wants to get back to Britain. A German lawyer is holding up the process. Selby has not hired the lawyer and believes that his life must be in danger.
Thankfully we are spared the sight of Morrissey sharing a room with Jordan. What we are not spared is Jordan in a natty pink shirt and pink tie outfit with added tobacco stained teeth. It was the kind of thing Jason King would wear when hanging around a bus station in Gloucester.
Jordan suddenly finds himself face to face and having dinner with Christine Morris. The Soviet spy from the very first story of Special Branch and who has popped up regularly since then. Maybe Morris wants to know about Selby and wishes to harm Selby.
Inman back in London is now worried that a simple operation has now been delayed. Also Jordan has met Morris and not informed Inman about it. A concerned Inman flies into Frankfurt.
It would had been a big ask that this episode was shot in Frankfurt, it was all interior studios. However you can spot one glaring issue. If Selby emerged in West Berlin, it would had been simple to take him to the British sector and fly him to the UK in an army plane. So what is he doing in Frankfurt which over 300 miles away in West Germany? Maybe Moxon will provide an answer.
I had no idea why Jordan would not inform his superiors that he had met Morris. I was confused as why Jordan would later go looking for Morris and placed himself in peril where Jordan is being taken by some mysterious men to East Germany.
It was all a little half baked but eventually Moxon did clear it all up. A bit of a wild goose chase in the end.
