- When Deanna's mother spurns advances made by a Ferengi Daimon, he takes it upon himself to kidnap the two of them, along with Commander Riker and steal them away aboard his ship.
- At the closing reception of a biennial trade conference, for the first time attended by the Ferengi race, Counselor Deanna Troi's mother, a full-blood Betazoid, scorns the advances of a Ferengi. When mother, daughter and Commander William T. Riker take shore-leave during a routine mapping voyage, he seizes his chance to kidnap them, and is found to have a practical motive beyond sexual attraction. Meanwhile young Wesley Crusher passes his tests for promotion to field ensign, but only then realizes he's rather likely to be assigned to another starship for further training...—KGF Vissers
- The Enterprise has been on duty at a trade conference and Counselor Troi's mother, Lwaxana, has been there as part of the Betazed delegation. The two spend some time together and Lwaxana expresses her concern that Deanna has not yet married. The Ferengi also attended the conference and they decide that having someone with Lwaxana's telepathic abilities would be of great assistance in their commercial dealings. They kidnap her along with Commander Riker and Deanna. In order to get her released, it will be necessary for Captain Picard to declare his ever lasting love for her and threaten the Ferengi with bodily harm if she is not released.—garykmcd
- The Enterprise has been on duty at a trade conference on Betazed (which the Ferengi are attending for the first time), and Counselor Troi's mother, Lwaxana (Majel Barrett), has been there as part of the Betazed delegation. The two spend some time together and Lwaxana expresses her concern that Deanna has not yet married. The Ferengi, represented by DaiMon Tog (Frank Corsentino), also attended the conference and they decide that having someone with Lwaxana's telepathic abilities would be of great assistance in their commercial dealings. Tog speaks to Lwaxana about her price for being his consort and his Telepath. Lwaxana insults and humiliates Tog in front of everyone and makes him leave the Enterprise. The Ferengi minds cannot be read by Betazeds.
Wesley has cleared the written exams for entrance to the Starfleet academy and now only has the oral exam to clear, before he is admitted.
The Ferengi kidnap Lwaxana along with Commander Riker and Deanna. Deanna had taken some shore leave to spend time with her mother on Betazed and Riker had followed her with some leave of his own. They were having a picnic together when the Ferengi intervened. Ferengi do not give woman the respect of clothing and keep Deanna and Lwaxana naked (although Lwaxana gets some coverings for them both). Tog wants to have sex with Lwaxana. To buy them more time, Lwaxana has sex with him, even though it revolts her.
Riker manages to trick the guards outside his holding cell and beats them unconscious. He gets to the communications panel but needs the access code from Tog. Deanna speaks to Lwaxana telepathically and Lwaxana is just able to get it (under the garb of programming the computer to make her favorite drink), but his deputy Farek (Ethan Phillips) interrupts and stops him before he can reveal it. Farek wants custody of Lwaxana to perform mind probes on her and understand how she gets her powers. Farek says that if Tog does not comply, he will report the access code incident, which could lead to Tog losing his command of his ship.
Meanwhile Betazed reports the disappearance of Riker, Lwaxana and Deanna to the Enterprise, who come to investigate. Data finds flowers in a pond, that Tog had brought for Lwaxana and that she had tossed aside. The flowers are not native to Betazed and came from a Ferengi world. They know that the Ferengi took hostages, but they don't know where to look. Riker meanwhile sets up an oscillation in the warp engine output. It will show up as a message in the subspace frequencies, but to Ferengi it will sound like noise.
Wesley is finally accepted into the oral exam section for entrance to Starfleet Academy. He is worried that he may not be assigned to Enterprise as his first assignment out of the Academy. 91% of graduates are not assigned to a Galaxy class star ship on their first assignment out of the academy. It is also possible that Picard may not be the captain of the Enterprise by the time Wesley graduates.
A ship is waiting to transport him and wont delay any longer. Just as Wesley is about to beam out, he figures out the odd component in the static of subspace frequencies. He reports to Picard and Data, who identify the location where it is coming from
Riker saves Lwaxana from Farek, while Enterprise is on an intercept course. Lwaxana promises to stay willingly with Tog if he releases Deanna and Riker. Tog accepts and Enterprise arrives on scene. Riker and Deanna are beamed back. In order to get Lwaxana released, it will be necessary for Captain Picard to declare his everlasting love for her and threaten the Ferengi with bodily harm if she is not released. Picard gives the performance of a lifetime to convince Tog that he desires Lwaxana more than him. Lwaxana is let go by Tog. Wesley misses his oral exams and intends to apply the following year. He is promoted to Ensign.
