Entertaining episode with a great Jeri Ryan performance
snoozejonc3 August 2020
Seven of Nine, Harry Kim and The Doctor are abducted by a race of beings who seem to have a problem with holograms.

As plot, this episode is really just an excuse to do a pretty effective body swap comedy. As an idea it is not original but it works well. We are used to Seven's no-nonsense, deadpan persona and to see her exhibiting The Doctor's exuberant mannerisms is laugh out loud funny in most scenes. The Harry Kim character functions as an effective straight man for all the humour.

The only thing you really need to do is sit back and enjoy Jeri Ryan doing an impression of Robert Picardo and listen to them banter in the sequences when they are back to their original character forms. These are actors with great chemistry providing memorable moments for the Star Trek franchise.

For me it's a 7.5/10 but I like to round upwards.

A lot of fun....
planktonrules6 March 2015
When the show begins, a shuttle with Seven, Harry and the Doctor is set upon by an alien species. It seems that these folks HATE holograms and detected the Doctor's presence on the ship. However, due to some quick thinking, Seven sticks the Doctor in a file within her Borg implants. This way, they can save him. Despite not finding the holo man, these folks take Harry and Seven prisoner. But with the Doctor inside, often Seven behaves a lot like him--and Jeri Ryan did a great job impersonating his manner. It's a bit confusing when the Captain of this ship, a guy, falls for Seven. And, a bit later, the Doctor finds himself falling for one of these aliens. All in all, very confusing but funny--and a great chance to see that Ms. Ryan really can act. Well worth seeing for this as well as Captain Janeway's unusual style of diplomacy in this particular show. A real treat.

This is an episode that brings in a sense of humor. When Kim, Seven, and the Doc find themselves grabbed by a crew that hates holograms (photonics), they are put in the brig. The Doc, to keep from being discovered, becomes part of Seven. Their talents get them an active role on the ship, treating casualties and illnesses. There are some comic moments when the beautiful Seven exhibits the Doc's overbearing personality. The Captain of the ship begins to put moves on him/her. They play it well and it is quite entertaining.

Warning: Spoilers
Jeri Ryan gives a stellar performance as 7 of 9 inhabited by the doctor. The rest of the episode doesn't matter, Jeri steals the show.

Great fun
Hughmanity1 March 2021
There has always been a character in every Star Trek series that is restrained emotionally and therefore somewhat limiting to the actor who plays him or her: Spock, Data, Tuvok, Seven of Nine. Thankfully the writers find ways to occasionally set the actor free with plot devices such as emotion chips for Data, viruses that overcome Vulcan logic or in this case, a body switch between the Doctor and Seven.

Jeri Ryan has always done a fantastic job with the Seven character and in this episode where she plays the Doctor, her acting skills are even more on display. She plays the Doctor's mannerisms and voice inflections to perfection and it's great fun. The Doctor is running amok in his human/Borg body and stirring up all kinds of trouble while saving the day in his haphazard way.

Loved this episode and I hope Seven/Jeri gets more chances to break out of her Borg shell.

The Doctor possesses Seven
Tweekums7 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This episode which focuses on an away mission that goes wrong for Seven of Nine, The Doctor and Harry features both action and humour. While out studying primitive DNA in a comet the Delta Flyer is attacked by an alien ship that is at war against holographic life forms and considers the doctor to be a threat. As his holo-matrix begins to fail his program is downloaded into Seven's cybernetic implants. This leads to the Doctor possessing Seven's body; something he seems to enjoy as he shows their captor the range of food and drink the Flyer's replicator can produce and even gets sexually aroused when given a massage by a female member of their captor's crew. Needless to say when he is transferred back to her emitter Seven is less than impressed. Back on Voyager Tuvok has entered his once-in-seven-year mating cycle which leads to emotional instability, Tom suggests he uses the holodeck to relieve his tensions but this attracts the hologram hating aliens. Luckily their ship is no match for Voyager and after the Doctor transmits the details of the ship the Flyer is on Voyager mounts a rescue.

This was a fun episode, while there are plenty of good action scenes the real highlight of this episode is Jeri Ryan's portrayal of Seven of Nine during her possession by The Doctor, it was delightful to see a normally very restrained character revelling in her senses.

2 become 1

Probably the best two characters on from Voyager make this a thoroughly entertaining episode. As the delta flyer with Harry, Seven and the Dr have been on a mission through Lokrim space they are arrested for transporting a phototonic, our Dr (only we know him as Voyagers' hologram). So to save him from being - terminated Seven downloads his program to her cyber implants and that's where the fun begins as he is now actually in control of her body. After she/he is taken to the captain of the lokrim ship for interrogation, having to prove that the replicators are not weapon creators, an overindulgence of rich food and sinthahol leads to an extremely funny episode.

Seven of doctor.
thevacinstaller18 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
All around great performance by Jeri Ryan in her interpretation of our loveable stuffy holographic doctor. I am glad he stopped short of sex --- that would just be really weird man. It's a solid episode that hopefully opens S09's eyes to enjoying what life has to offer --- the line about indulgence makes life worth living was poignant for me at where I am currently in life. I am currently a worker drone fully entrenched in our cycle of paying taxes, working, eating and eventually dying. It's lame and I want out --- I want more from life.

The subplot with Tuvok felt like it came from an idea box that the writers have tossed in random B plots and just happened to blindly pick this one. It's good to give Tuvok some screen time I guess? Can we have these plots somehow merge or compliment each other?

Jeri Allowed to Stretch
StevenKar29 January 2023
As if we needed another reason to love Seven of Nine and the actress playing her. Fantastic performance by Jeri, stole the show, and showed you what she was capable of as an actor.

The addition of Seven as a character provided the writers with fertile ground for new stories. I don't blame the other actors for resenting Jeri/Seven. I wish the writers focused on the other characters as much as they focused on Seven (and on the Doc), Voyager would have been a more balanced show toward its characters. I love them all, by the way, and I love the show--to me it's like comfort food.

A few episodes before this, Seven was given another chance to shine, it was the episode in which she thought she was going to die.

You became sexually aroused in my body!
three8s20137 November 2021
Seven of Nine: And the massage you got from Lieutenant Jaryn?

The Doctor: Entirely therapeutic!

Seven of Nine: You became sexually aroused in my body!

Ha! The best line of the series!

Ever notice that the non humans have the best role.

Seven Doc Data T'Pol K-2SO ok he was from Rogue One but you get the point.

Of PON FARR and Holograms.
XweAponX6 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Or, as the Lokirrim call them, "Photonic Insurgents".

Seven of Sixty-Nine and Harry Kim are suffering through an away mission with The Doctor - He has found a Comet which is carrying some "Pre-Animate Matter Caught in the Matrix" (Some of these words were uttered by Captain Chekov in "Star Wreck II: The Wrath of Khan" - Or the matter COULD have really been caught IN The Matrix, I think "The Matrix" had been shown in Theatres by that time). After I watched this incredibly funny episode, I felt like *I* was in the Matrix.

To get back off topic, The Doctor is going off on a new tangent about this Pre-Animate gunk when The Delta Flyer is Attacked in an unprovoked fashion, by Overly Paranoid Lokirrim Aliens hunting down "Photonic Insurgents". Enter Fritz Sperberg (Ranek) and yet another role for Megan Gallagher (Lt. Jaryn)- And The Doctor seems to have been decompiled by the Lokirrim's "Remote-Decompiler" - At least this is what Seven says has happened. "You Murdered him... you decompiled him", and they get tossed into the Lokirrim's Hoosegow.

But the reports of The Doctor's Decompilation are a little Premature, he stuck himself into Seven! So for the next 39 minutes, Jeri Ryan makes us BELIEVE that Robert Picardo is LIVING in her Borg Implanted SKIN.

Meanwhile, back on Voyeur, Tuvok is undergoing a Tarelian... Oh, Takalian! A Tarkalian Mumps attack that he had about "seven" years earlier. Tom Paris sets him on a diet of Hormones and promises discretion, but it is not like all of the rest of the crew including Janeway don't already know what's really happening.

"Seven" is called on by Captain Ranek to explain the Delta Flyer, Replicators and Cheesecake. So they gorge themselves and drink massive amounts of booze to top it off, while The Doctor-in-Seven blathers on about how much she "owes everything to the most important person in the universe" - The Doctor (of course).

She/He gets the Mobile Emitter back but has to agree to act as a Ships Doctor- But when The Doctor is finally put back into The Emitter, Seven is angry- she can hardly stand, due to the 8, Er, make that 9 glasses of Champagne The Doctor indulged in. If you think back a few episodes, remember what happened when she drank just ONE glass (It was in the episode where they tried to use the Quantum-Slipstream Drive from "Hope and Fear"... "Timeless").

After The Doctor agrees to behave, Seven plans to acquire Captain Ranek's command codes. Seems like Ranek is a little Intrigued by "Doctor" Seven as well, he tried to cram his tongue down Seven's Throat. To make matters worse, the Doc is also a little intrigued by Jaryn (Gallagher), who almost causes an unlikely "Hormonal Accident" while giving him a massage! So it is not just Ranek who has the hots for Seven, The Doctor is going after Megan Gallagher! Which causes several uncomfortable situations-in-one.

Back on Voyeur, Tom creates a Holodeck version of Tuvok's wife (Marva Hicks, who is the last I saw had a great voice in a Babylon 5 episode, while singing a gospel song) - And we get to see, almost, what really would have happened to Spock in "Amok Time" had his wife decided not to go all "Kalifi" on him- But as Tuvok gets into it, Voyeur is attacked by another Lokirrim ship, because they detected the Holodeck. Janeway has to agree not to use the Holodeck for a while, frustrating Tuvok. Grr!

When Seven confronts The Doctor about his arousal, he gives us GUILTY look number 47: The jutting-out of the lower jaw. What a spot! There simply is no way of coming out of this conundrum clean, Er, Ah, Ehem, Or, with clean pants at least.

The Award of the Decade goes to Jeri Ryan, she has every move, every vocal inflection, every bit of The Doctor's personality perfectly emulated. With a bit of Femininity added. But he/she is still his verbose, bragging and irritating self.

So She/He uses the ammo She/He's GOT against Ranek, and knocks him out, sends a message to Voyeur, and they are just as Confuddled by this Genderbent Doctor. But they get the gist, kick their escort ships Arse, and haul butt at high warp over to where Ranek's ship is. Ranek tries to retaliate, but the real Seven shuts down their Shields, and Ranek is hurt. It takes The Doctor saving his life to get the whole Lokirrim ship to drop their personal shields as well. Fortunately some good comes out of this.

This episode was some indication of the upcoming Photonic Rebellion that is explored in "Flesh and Blood" parts I and II- At this time, Janeway had no idea - That she caused this as well.

And as always this whole Episode is Tom Paris' fault - Or at least Robert Duncan McNeill's who directed it. Ironically, Paris whips up a Photonic solution for Tuvok' 7-Year Itch, and this plays out in parallel with the Photonic Phoreplay of The Doctor.

Does the bridge of the Lokirrim ship look familiar? That's because the doorways and viewscreens appear to be a redress of The standard Klingon bridge set. Funny, I have watched this episode several times and I just realized...

Totally underrated
rodkb-627591 January 2024
I agree with several reviews that gave this episode a 10. But it was first after a second viewing that I grew to appreciate Jeri Ryan's fantastic talents. I understand from the trivia section that she studied Picardos mannerisms painstakingly. It must have been one of her proudest moments in the series. IT was surely one of the most enjoyable ones for me. I originally rated it an 8 two years ago, but after seeing it again and the many uncontrolable laughing spurts I had, I can truly say that I enjoyed it. This is a gem in the rough! I see Jeri Ryan in an entirely different light after coming to appreciate this episode,

Seven of Dine
tomsly-400152 February 2024
An extremely refreshing and light-hearted episode in which Jeri Ryan can once again show that she is a versatile actress and is capable of portraying more than just the cold and emotionless Seven.

I was skeptical at first. Most stories about body swapping (especially when the body is that of the opposite sex) tend to be silly, cheesy, and cringe. Just look at the DS9 episode "Profits and Lace". Although no bodies are swapped here, Quark is suddenly more woman than man and Ferengi. One of the low points of this series.

However, this episode does this body swap in a fun and interesting way. Because the doctor is a hologram and has not yet been able to perceive smells or experience the joys of epicurean indulgence, he reacts through Seven's senses like a small child who has been given too much candy. Above all, it is the small situations that create a funny overall picture. E.g. When the doctor (in Seven's body) replicates American cheesecake, swallows a few bites, then replicates another cake for the captain, but then gives him his/her half-bitten piece and keeps the other piece himself. Or when the doctor notices the smell of Harry's sweat for the first time and then smells himself, or rather Seven's body, and then remarks that despite the long day, she still smells like the proverbial rose.

Jeri Ryan does an excellent job of imitating the doctor's gestures and facial expressions. Even the little things like his "hmmm" or his smile or the movement of his head. It seems pretty authentic.

The series has actually gotten better since Seven came on board. Kes, on the other hand, was designed to be pretty one-dimensional from the start and her character was never given the chance to get as much screen time as Seven.

one of the best episodes
vincentviolet-650714 September 2023
This is definitely one of my top 5 favourite episodes of voyager. The Doctor and seven Of Nine do a body swap thing and it is so funny. I like most of the other voyager characters too but those two are by far my favourites. I wish they ended up as a couple they are the perfect couple of beauty and brains. This episode shows what great actors they both are and it is really well written. It is definitely one of the funniest episodes of Star Trek ever. Robert Ricardo is great as always as the doctor he could read the phonebook and make it entertaining. Jery Ryan really shines in this episode though because she has to channel the doctor character and clearly had fun with it, like she gets to do an impression of her friend. I'll freely admit I can be very shallow and the fact that she looks like a supermodel with a perfect body means I could watch her do anything and enjoy it, but she actually is a great actress too. You sometimes don't see it because the seven of nine character is so focused and rarely emotes but in episodes like this you see that she has a lot of talent and range as an actress. I think it is kind of like Data from TNG he is so wooden because that is what the character is but when you see him play other parts you see how good the actor is. I think Voyager might be the most underrated Trek series. It is a bit hit or miss but its best episodes can easily compete with the other shows too. I'm now going to look up some pictures of seven Of Nine in her skin tight body suit for research purposes.
