When Captain Janeway tells the two holonovel children that she hopes to be a friend to them as well as a governess, Henry replies in Latin, "In ullam rem ne properemus." This means in English "Let's not rush into anything."
Thomas Dekker played Thomas Picard, one of Captain Jean-Luc Picard's imaginary children in Star Trek: Generations (1994).
The training exercise the ex-Maquis crew are put through on the Holodeck bridge is a variation of the classic Kobayashi Maru scenario, an unwinnable scenario first introduced in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982). Only Captain James T. Kirk has ever passed this test, and only then by reprogramming the scenario to allow himself to "win." He was awarded a commendation for "original thinking."
Unlike most of the season finales in Star Trek: Voyager, this episode is a standalone episode of regular duration; however, The 37's (1995) was originally intended to be the first season finale, and the possibility of it being a two-part episode was initially considered.
This episode was not intended as a season finale, and thus does not include any of the usual cliffhanger endings or stunning new developments typical of Star Trek season-enders.
