Robert Picardo enjoyed his double role: "I play not only the Doctor, but his programmer, so I achieved a lifelong ambition of working with an actor who I've admired."
This episode remains one of only two Star Trek episodes in which a regular cast member receives a writing credit, as it was written by Robert Picardo. The other was the animated The Infinite Vulcan (1973), written by Walter Koenig.
Although Jupiter Station is mentioned in numerous episodes of Voyager as well as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) and Star Trek: Enterprise (2001), this is its only actual on-screen appearance.
After being introduced to Dr. Zimmerman's holographic iguana Leonard, the Doctor says, "I'm a doctor, not a zookeeper." The iguana's name and the line are references to Dr. Leonard McCoy from Star Trek (1966), who made the line "I'm a doctor, not a ___" famous as a running gag.
Dr. Zimmerman comments that he hasn't left Jupiter Station in "over four years", referring to his visit to Deep Space 9 to interview Julian Bashir for the Long-term Medical Hologram between Stardates 50564 and 50712 in Doctor Bashir, I Presume (1997). This suggests that this episode takes place in early 2377.
