This is the first and only episode in which we see what a healthy Vidiian looks like.
In the original broadcast version of this episode, the song playing on the radio while The Doctor and Pel are in the holographic simulation of Mars is "I Only Have Eyes for You." On the VOY Season 2 DVD, the song "My Prayer" is used. As of May 2016, the Netflix broadcast of the episode included the audio from "I Only Have Eyes for You," but the subtitles used the lyrics from "My Prayer." Eventually, for the Paramount+ streaming service, "I Only Have Eyes for You" was restored.
The building complex in the background of the Mars segment was mostly created with reused items, including sewage strainers, and was reused on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993).
Danara's ultimate decision is essentially opposite to the one chosen in The Cage (1966) by Vina, who chose to continue living her illusion of beauty on Talos IV rather than return to her own people in her disfigured state.
The tension between Chakotay and Paris, which has been building over the past few episodes, comes to a head here, but is not ultimately resolved until the following episode "Investigations".
