Jaffa meets girl
owlaurence22 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is interesting in many regards. First, it tells us a bit about Jaffa women -who, as "civilians", have mostly been ignored so far-: it turns out that Baal has decided to do without them, so they are currently leading their own Amazon-like rebellion, literally fighting for their right to be born at all (hence the title). Granted, the misogynistic theme is rather cliché-ed; it had even been broached on (badly) in one of the very first few episodes. But now it fits quite well with what we know of Baal and of Jaffa society, and it is only part of the main plot.

The other part deals with a plot line that has kept popping up all season: the problem of the Jaffa's continued dependency on Goa'uld symbiotes and their wariness to use Tritonin as an alternative. Here the plot is a bit weaker, as we will never discover *why* Tritonin is not foolproof (in this one and only case EVER!) or *why* some women are against it as a matter of principle.

Needless to say, both plots heavily focus on Teal'c and provide a lot of character development for him. This is great, as most of the time we do not get enough insights into his real personality and feelings. There are also some good action scenes, so while not capital (sadly, the Amazons will not resurface in the next episodes) the episode is solid and entertaining.

(By the way, every time I watch this episode, I cannot help but picture the following scene: "Say, Chris, if you could write your own episode, what would you get Teal'c to do?" "Hmm, sleep with a really, really hot blonde.")

The Female Jaffa
claudio_carvalho9 January 2018
The SG-1 travels to a planet to meet a group of rebel Jaffa; out of the blue, they are attacked by an army of Jaffa and saved by a group of female Jaffa. They invite the SG-1 to travel to their plane to meet their leader, Ishta. She proposes an alliance between her rebel group and the Earthlings. Ishta explains that they have problem to take symbiotes since they need to defeat Jaffa and the SG-1 offers Tritonin as an alternative method for them. Four women volunteer to travel to the SGC as subject to experiment Tritoninn. But the outraged Neith does not accept the use of Tritonin jeopardizing the life of her teenage sister Nesa.

"Birthright" is another episode with a Jaffa group. The difference this time is the gender, since it is a female group of warriors. However the great attraction is the gorgeous Jolene "T'Pol" Blalock in the role of the leader of the female warriors. My vote is six.

A Decent Story Makes a Decent Episode
fcabanski14 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This one develops the ongoing story of the battle with the Goa'uld.

After a number of not funny "humorous" episodes that don't further the underlying story arc, this is refreshing.

SG-1 meets female Jaffa, who attack other Jaffa to steal symbiotes. Tea'lc doesn't like it, because it's against the Jaffa code. SG-1 convinces the women to try Tretonin. It will make these Jaffa free of the Goa'uld.

When Teal'c fights the leader of the female Jaffa, it would have been easy to go the route of having the woman defeat Teal'c. She puts up a good fight, but she doesn't beat Teal'c. That's consistent with his status as a top Jaffa warrior.

Recruiting Jaffa and freeing them from dependence on the Goa'uld is back to business for SG-1 in their fight against the Goa'uld.

T'Pol plays the leader of the rogue Jaffa women. Jolene Blalock can't seem to put away the Vulcan in the middle of her Enterprise run. But it's not so bad that it ruins the episode.

Uprising
Calicodreamin23 March 2022
Well developed storyline with a fresh look at the Jaffa and Goa'uld structure. The characters were well acted and the cast as a whole had good chemistry. Surprisingly compelling.

Great storyline, better acting
Mischief81030 July 2014
This one of the most well-written and well-acted episodes in the SG-1 series.

The plot is compelling: A group of female Jaffa have formed a rebel force, and manage to survive past puberty by raiding Goa'uld planets, killing "bad" Jaffa, and harvesting their symbiotes. They are shown to be formidable warriors and the equals of their male counterparts.

But Teal'c objects to their practice of killing other Jaffa for the purposes of preserving their own lives, and SGC proposes an alternative--but not all of the women in the force are down for it. Conflict emerges.

Jolene Blalock is a gifted actress and is already comfortable in sci- fi/action roles. She delivers here again.

This is one of those episodes that I have tagged to watch over and over again.
