According to the dvd commentary by Tom Greene Tom Greene, this episode was written as a two-hour or two-part episode. When it was decided to make it a single hour-long episode, many scenes were edited down or removed. One thread that was removed was the patient in the bed next to Jake Stephen Collins while he was recovering. In the only recovery scene, there is a cane on the bed. This was part of the missing scenes. This cane is what is used by Jake in the final scene at the guillotine.
Sccording to the dvd commentary by Tom Greene Tom Greene, the scene in which Louie Roddy McDowall views the guillotine from the balcony and then closes the doors, that was a partial set consisting of only the balcony, doors, and part of the surrounding wall. That was then cut to the next shot filmed in the studio, making a seamless transition.
The "French" playing cards we see had mildly salacious pictures, suitable for television in the 1980s. The real "French" decks of the early 20th century were truely pornographic.
