Not quite the best of Plucky
TheLittleSongbird17 August 2020
By all means that is not meant in a derogatory way at all. In no way is that saying that to me "Best o Plucky Duck Day". It is a long way away from being that. It's mainly saying that there are other Plucky-centric episodes that are better, speaking as someone who loves Plucky and considers him my favourite of the Tiny Toons characters that are not Buster and Babs. There are also better and more consistent segment structured episodes of 'Tiny Toon Adventures'.

Again, that is not bashing "Best o Plucky Duck Day" as an episode on its own, just in comparison to other episodes. It is still though a very good episode on its own without comparing it to other episodes and as a 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episode it is a more than worthy one. Anybody that at least likes Plucky, loves in my case, shouldn't be disappointed either, as all three segments comprising the episode ("One Minute Till Three", "Sticky Feathers Duck" and "Duck in the Dark") show why he is a great character, even if the segment quality is not quite consistent.

The weakest of the three to me was "Sticky Feathers Duck". Which still amuses and one that has been there (not me just to say) will relate, plus it is well made, but it's not as funny or as inventive as the other two segments and it's pretty predictable.

Hamton is on the bland side.

Plucky on the other hand is far from that. He is wonderfully wild and witty, very close to his Looney Tunes counterpart Daffy Duck (some may argue that personality-wise he's too similar, that's never struck me as a problem). And also quite endearing. The other two segments are great. Especially the hilarious, very clever and wonderfully nightmarish "Duck in the Dark", that would make anybody that watched horror films younger than ought nostalgic for how the experiences made them feel at the time. When done well, horror is very entertaining and creepy and "Duck in the Dark" captures both.

Visually, "Best o Plucky Duck Day" looks great and has some very imaginative creepy visuals in "Duck in the Dark". The animation being very vibrant, richly detailed and with smooth and sometimes bold (namely the expressions) drawing. The music is hip and infectiously character and the theme song will never stop being a classic, has yet to get old. The dialogue constantly brought such a smile to my face and made me laugh frequently, delivered by immensely talented voice actors (some of the most prolific and at the time some of the best too) in their element. Joe Alaskey was perfect as Plucky.

Concluding, very good. 8/10
