- IN "BUTTON, BUTTON": A poor, bitter married couple, Norma and Arthur Lewis, receive a mysterious box with a red button and a note saying that someone will visit them to explain it. Arthur has to work that night, so Norma is home when Mr. Steward arrives. He gives Norma an envelope that has a key in to open the dome of the box for access to the button. He tells her that if she pushes the button, someone she doesn't know will die and she and Arthur will receive $200,000.
Over the next few days, Norma and Arthur argue over whether or not it's real (Arthur thinks nothing will happen, but Norma keeps thinking of how much money it is) and Arthur throws the box away. In the middle of the night, Norma retrieves the box from the dumpster explaining that Mr. Steward said he would return for the box because the boxes are reprogrammed and reused. Norma and Arthur continue to argue and are very bitter towards each other, themselves and the world in general.
Norma finally decides that she is going to push the button. Arthur tells and then begs her not to, but she opens the top and pushes the button. Nothing happens and Arthur walks off from Norma, disgusted. The next day, Mr. Steward arrives to take the button unit. He confirms that she pushed it and tells her "Only one push to a customer". She asks if someone died and he tells her yes. He tells her there's $200,000 in the briefcase and she opens it as Arthur walks in.
He tells them to enjoy the money and takes the button unit, telling them that it will be reprogrammed and offered to someone else with the same terms and conditions. Norma asks, "someone else?" and he tells her yes. He tells her that it will be offered to "someone, who you don't know" and leaves (implying that the next person to receive the button will hold her life in his/her hands just as she held the life of the previous button-holder in her hands).
