A Good Episode, And A Tough One To Figure Out
ccthemovieman-110 October 2010
Here's another interesting episode in which you're never sure what's going to happen next. Some characters start off as good people and then turn bad, and others are the opposite. Some you can just never figure out.

"Josh Randall" (Steve McQueen, series star) is caught up in the middle of this problem, put at a standstill for most of the story until near the end when he has to make a move and then deal with something even he admits, "boy, I didn't expect that!" Meanwhile, it was good to see Kasey Rogers ("Kate") again. She had been in two episodes the previous year and you can't miss this girl - very pretty with an incredible body. Born "Imogene Rogers," she played in a lot of TV shows for a number of years. The more well-known Gloria Talbot is in the episode, too.

The only bad part of this particular episode was that you never saw how Rogers character and a few others (like the town big-wig who made a big fuss) reacted after all the you-know-what hit the fan. I would have interested to see what they said and did....but I guess there is only so much you can show in a 25-minute story.

Extremely Revealing of Steve McQueen
Easygoer1028 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
(12/28/2019) - In this episode, a key portion of the plot is how one woman holds her boyfriend in contempt simply because he is the "deputy" sheriff. This may be the best example (in the entire series) of Steve McQueen's distrust of women! However, in his defense, this could be the writer (Norman Katkov), or, it may be both of them. Regardless, one woman is portayed as conniving, and using whatever means necessary to get what she wants. In this case, it is for her "boyfriend" to become "Sheriff" instead of "Deputy" Sheriff. When she tells him "Do I have to spell it out for you?", she is clearly implying for the deputy to "allow the sheriff to be killed", by the deputy's "inaction". In the end, 3 men get killed; including (of course) her boyfriend. For me, the moral of this episode is "You can't trust a woman"; regardless of whose idea it was. In real life, Steve McQueen's distrust of women was well known. Lastly, Richard Anderson co-stars. Anderson was an outstanding actor in the early days of television. Also (prior to this episode), he played the military prosecutor in one of the greatest anti-war films ever made: "Paths of Glory" (1957). This was legendary wizard director Stanley Kubrick's first film to bring him great critical acclaim (although not much money). Banned in France over 20 years for portaying their WWI generals poorly, it was a very big step in what was to become a brilliant storyteller's career. Even today, over 60 years later, it is one of the greatest films ever made. Apologies for digressin. THis is definitely a "must see" episode.

Power corrupts some people
Johnny_West6 July 2022
This was an interesting study of people. Richard Anderson (Six Million Dollar Man) is captured prisoner of Josh Randall. His gang captures the sheriff and two others to use for trade bait or to kill. Randall works on Anderson's pride as a man, and his guilt, while trying to track down the gang and the hostages.

Meanwhile the deputy sheriff (played by Terry Becker, who was later Chief Sharkey on Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea) is left in charge. His first desire is to help free the hostages with Randall. However, his sleazy, conniving gold-digger girlfriend, the saloon girl (played by hard looking Kasey Rogers) tells him he is a loser, and she is leaving town. Without any hesitation she tells Becker that if he wants her crusty love, he needs to become the top dog in town, and the sheriff needs to die.

In less than five seconds Becker has changed, and he leads the posse in circles the next day, and one of the hostages is sent into town dead. Becker's plan is to keep misleading the posse until the sheriff is killed.

Fortunately for everyone, John Anderson decides that he is not OK with innocent people getting killed for his freedom, so he tells Randall he will help him find the gang. Becker hears about this, and rides out with Randall and Anderson to find the gang. His real intention is to kill them both, so the sheriff will get killed off too. The final ten minutes are action packed, as all hell breaks loose. Excellent episode, excellent ending.

Richard Anderson as the prisoner
ebertip6 May 2019
Anderson plays a big role when Josh doesn't see that one coming. Interesting last 15 seconds.
